So this is probably the most random show I've ever reviewed on this blog... its an older HBO show called Big Love. It started in 2006 and ended in 2011... and no one ever really talked about it much. It was under some controversy for an episode that showed a very private Morman ceremony... idk. Haven't gotten that far and don't remember much about that... but it made me curious to watch although that seems wrong to show a private ceremony... but it seems interesting to see. Lol idk.
So what Big Love is about is polygamy. A regular guy owns a hardware store and happens to have 3 wives. I've only seen the first 2 episodes so far... but a lot has happened already! First off you meet his 3 wives. Barb, Nikki, and Marg. Barb is sort of the "control freak" if you could call her that. She's the first wife, she's the most... together I would say at this point and she's in control of the money and the days that each wife gets to be with him. I don't think I would describe her as a "control freak." But she's certainly in control. Then there is Nikki, played by Chloe Sevingy who has 2 younger sons and a shopping addiction. And Ginnifer Goodwin's character Marge, who is young and kind of insecure because she just had a baby and still didn't loose all the weight... and their husband is having trouble... performing on her night and it upset her.
Now this isn't even everything that happened just in that first episode... Bill, the main man of the show had to go to his parents house because his dad was terribly sick and his brother called up saying their mom wouldn't take him to the hospital... and then you find out they live in a really strict polygamous community... like the ones on the news... and its crazy. You see his mom doesn't believe in medicine and she doesn't want the community to get shut down so she isn't taking the dad that is dying to the hospital. There's this older man (who I think is Nikki's father) that introduces Bill to this young girl named Rhonda... and then you realize thats one of his wives... and its scary. And she asks Barb if she can have babies anymore and she says no she can't because she had cancer. Then the little girl said "She got cancer because she wanted to leave the community and god punished her by not letting her have more babies. I'm never going to get cancer." And then someone gives her a hot drink and she sounds "That's too warm. I want it with Milk." And she doesn't snap... but she sounded very spoiled or privileged and very uneducated... and that was the saddest and kind of the most real moment I've ever seen on television... it was just a great moment and that really made the pilot for me. It was just very well done.
And then he thought the mom was poisoning him and the old man that I think is Nikki's father is blackmailing Bill because he wants money from the new store and Bill tries viagra... its crazy. That is a lot for the first episode!
So I thought this was a really good show just because so much happened in the first episode... I feel like it might have been a bad thing though because really not much happened in the 2nd episode... so that wasn't good. It wasn't a bad second episode... but idk. It wasn't bad at all. I will continue watching it, I really liked the characters. I like how they show this as an ordinary family... because it is an ordinary family, just not the same as everyone else's family. I feel like that aspect of it makes it more sympathetic, because they are good characters and even though it seems this is hard for them... they're good people and this is just how they live.
I'm not endorsing polygamy here... lol. But its weird how progressive they are and yet still old fashioned. Its... interesting.
So yeah, if you're looking for something different to watch, this is a good option. A little underrated in my opinion! Especially considering how much stuff happened in the first episode alone! Its a good show! I would say if you like watching movies and you don't know what movie to watch or if you're up late and don't want to watch a movie super late... this is a good choice. Lol. Even though it started 10 years ago... its worth checking out!
Also wanted to say the end of the pilot had some interesting facts about polygamy. It was banned from the Mormon Church in 1890 but it is still practiced and I think it said 20,000-40,000 people were practicing. That was in 2006 too... so I wonder if that is still the statistic.
