I think it was yesterday I mentioned that there was an inclusivity lately... especially with advertising... and it just makes me think ads have come such a long way.
When I was in my Women's Studies class, we actually looked at older advertisements that were sexist... there were a lot of racist ones... and it was upsetting... but I think we've gotten further and are actually awesomely inclusive in their advertisements.
Take Covergirl for example. They have quite a diverse group of people represented in their ads. Ellen Degeneres, Queen Latifa and Sofia Vegara are all over 35, which is cool. Queen Latifah and Ellen are Lesbians... and it was sort of a stereotype when Ellen was starting that lesbians weren't really "Covergirls." I think that's kind of cool. Ingrid Nielson, Katy Perry, Janelle Monae, Pink, Zendaya, Nura Afia,Amy Pham, and James Charles. Nura Afia is the first covergirl that wears a hijab and James Charles is the first male covergirl! That is a LOT different than other makeup advertisers today and I think that is absolutely awesome!
Another thing I mentioned yesterday... and I'm not quite sure what brand of toy it is... but there is a commercial out there with kids with downs syndrome... and it isn't like the toys are being marketed specifically to kids with downs syndrome... it just shows them playing like any other kid, and I think that is really cool!
On the news a few weeks ago they mentioned that there is more inclusivity with dolls also. Barbie has different body types now, you can get wheelchairs for dolls. Now they even have dolls to look like they have cancer and other diseases. It still didn't show a doll with downs syndrome... but I think they are probably working on that soon.
It shows that this is the way the world is. And that is beautiful. I'm glad that soon, hopefully no one will feel left out of anything and everyone will feel beautiful. This is the world I live in, and it is beautiful... amidst everything else happening... this is right.
