So have you ever noticed things that aren't necessarily sexist... but its something that wouldn't happen if it were a man? I've been noticing that A LOT lately and I thought I would share it.
First off: The show Selfie. This is not a terrible show: I reviewed it for this blog even and I said I liked it a lot... but its a very unrealistic show and I don't think people are getting that. Yes its a comedy and there aren't that many female-driven comedies today... but really the jokes are almost slightly offensive to women. Eliza is a powerful business woman that has a weird job description that involves social media... so she's on her phone a lot. But they show her on the phone checking Instagram or whatever during a meeting... really? Is it not absurd? And it doesn't sound offensive to women at all... but at the same time, I don't think that they would ever do that type of thing to a man. It wouldn't be the same type of thing... I'm not sure, I may be being to critical about this... but I don't think I'm being overly crazy saying that thats slightly misogynistic. There are several shows that are better and funnier than Selfie that have very strong female roles in them. Even take The Mindy Project. Mindy and Eliza are very similar characters... but Mindy is still a stronger female role than Eliza. I don't know. This one could be off, but I think that its something they wouldn't switch the genders of.
After that whole thing happened I heard on the news today that a woman had ebola. How did the news reporters report this story. They said: "We don't know much about this woman, we just know that she is single, lives alone and has no pets." Wow. Way to make that sound extremely sad. Just kick someone when their down. I get why they say that, so that we know there is no chance that she would spread the disease... but there is a better way to say it then THAT! Never in a million years would they say that about a man that had the disease. Its just... thats a harsh way to put it and too much info for tv. It wouldn't happen to a man.
And today... this one is slightly personal. This totally isn't just me being paranoid because this would not happen to a man. I was at a restaurant and I was splitting nachos with my friend. And the entree I ordered comes in a half size and a full size. I was planning on ordering the full size because I thought a full size would be a good size for dinner and a half size would be better for lunch. Plus then I can have leftovers for the weekend. When I ordered it she said "okay do you want the half size?" Didn't even consider I might want the full size... like what? I wasn't planning on eating many of the nachos... which were quite big, so I could have probably eaten a whole size of the entree. I didn't like that she just skipped over it and only offered me the half size. No one would say that to a man because no one cares about men eating to much or being overweight. But if you're a fat woman you might as well just live by yourself and contract Ebola and die as long as you don't spread it to anyone.
And then I wanted dessert too and she offered it to my friends that it came with their meal... it didn't come with my meal or my other friends meal, but we still wanted dessert. And its like really? First you force me to get a half order now you're depriving me of molten chocolate cake? What the fuck is this?
I did eventually order dessert... lol. Also when she asked me for a half rack I should have just said "fuck that I want a full rack biotch!" If it was ribs or something I probably would have done that. It just isn't right and it wouldn't happen to a man. I am very much like Ron Swanson and I could have just said "I know what I'm about" and eaten the whole damn thing... but I have to be "like a lady" I guess so I politely backed down and got the half order and just ate more nachos than I thought.
And I could probably go on and on about this. People complain "All about that Bass" doesn't promote healthy body image. People say Gone Girl is sexist because (spoilers) women don't make up stories about rape and frame their husband's for murdering them. 1) Curvy girls have to deal with seeing unnaturally skinny women in photographs and skinny celebrities that have personal trainers that normal people can't afford and don't have the time for. I'm in no way saying its bad to be skinny, but get real. We live in a society where there is not a lot of love, support or even recognition for curvy and plus sized women. Let us have this one. 2) Everything about the plot of Gone Girl is absurd. It could all very well happen in real life, but it is in no way saying this is the normal way women behave. Tyler Perry's character Tanner Bolt even says in the movie that there really isn't a right way to react when your wife goes missing, so that clears that bit of info up.
Alrighty... I'm done. Lol. Remember these things aren't things that are downright sexist, they just aren't things people would say about a man. And then 2 side-rants at the bottom that I guess don't have to do with anything about that... I just thought they fit in this conversation and I had some strong opinions about them also.
