So I'm going to do this review a little bit differently. I've already watched both episodes of Better Call Saul once... but I feel the need to watch them both again. So I'm going to go over my initial thoughts and then rewatch both episodes and write a more in depth review about these.
Initial Thoughts:
I really loved the way that the show started out. It was really good start to finish and I thought the pilot was very strong and did not disappoint at all. I loved the beginning scene with Cinnabon and then it ended with him meeting Tuco... really strong and good show. Overall, great pilot.
2nd episode, not sure why... I was a little disappointed. I liked it a lot when I was watching it and like my heart was pounding and I thought overall it was really exciting. I thought it cooled down a little in the second half hour of the show. This morning my mom said "I didn't see the end of Better Call Saul" and I said "You know, I forget what happened." So... theres that.
I was really careful about not comparing the pilot to breaking bad... but I think the second episode I was kind of comparing to Breaking Bad... it isn't breaking bad at all, I need to kind of get that out of my head when I watch it again.

It's always interesting when they don't call something a pilot... And this didn't feel so much like a pilot as much as another tale that we haven't hears yet. We already know Saul pretty well so it seems like we know what to expect... But we don't know Jimmy McGill and we don't know the lonely manager of Cinnabon. The opening scene was absolutely brilliant. That is definitely what I pictuered Saul doing right now. I thought it was a good scene. And the end was really unexpected. I didn't think anyone other than Mike from breaking bad was going to show up.
I thought for the beginning of a season, it was exciting. It was familiar but not too familiar. They added some interesting characters, good actors and overall it was pretty good. I zoned out a little bit the first time I watched it when Saul and his brother were talking, but I still think he's a pretty good character and I'm excited to see where it goes from there.

Have to admit... I was a little underwhelmed by this. I liked it, I was on the edge of my seat the first time watching it... And there was excitement. I like that we're almost seeing Tuco Salamaca's origin story as well as Saul's. In Breaking Bad he was absolutely batshit crazy, in this he's just a little crazy. It seems like he just broke bad himself. The Tuco in breaking bad wouldn't have even questioned whether or not to kill the twins, this Tuco was a little more reasonable. That also shows that Saul really is a great lawyer, he talked him out of it... And Saul takes pride in that.
And we see Jimmy McGill frustrated with his life. After he just has all this excitement with Tuco... It seems a little bleak to just do his everyday lawyering. That montage they show is brilliant. On a second watch it made more relatable, you can see how Jimmy McGill becomes Saul Goodman.
And it's a little crazier than Breaking Bad because on Breaking Bad we saw the rise and fall of Heisenberg. We started out seeinng him as Walter White, boring everyday teacher, father and he's sort of going through a mid-life crisis... And then he finds out it's the end of his life... So he becomes Heisenberg and we get to see that change. Here we already know the "Heisenberg" and we know that he falls and fails and becomes a manager at a Cinnabon... But he's still Jimmy McGill right now and we can see why he's interested in becoming Saul Goodman.
Overall, I find this kind of more relatable than Breaking Bad because I can actually see him being bored and I understand why he chooses he path that he does. I can see being bored and choosing to become a bad guy because something crazy happens to me. It makes sense. Saul isn't totally good, but he plays it safe. Jimmy McGill is the same way. It's a really interesting thing to see.
Definite recommend especially for fans of Breaking Bad.
BYEEEE!
