So I wasn't really planning on doing a Throwback Thursday on this... but after knowing the current plot line of Jane The Virgin and the way that the first season kind of foreshadows a lot of the plot lines to the current season and situation that just happened... there will be spoilers... just another warning here. Lol.
So they mention very early on that Michael would love Jane until his dying day... I didn't think that that would be something that would happen sooner rather than later... but it did happen early on in his life and early on in their marriage. And there are lots of symbols with Michael having to do with his heart. His heart glows for Jane, and Jane's heart glows for him. I think that time was sort of a symbol with Michael as well. They mentioned his patience with dating Jane for 2 years and them not having sex... he was upset that he had time away from Jane... it was all kind of foreshadowing that he would end up passing away before anyone was ready.
There's also a lot of symbolism specifically with each character. Twins is Petra, she is having an affair with Roman Zazo who killed his twin brother, and later on Petra has twins and we find out that she is a twin. Rafael has a family dynamic going on. He wants him and Jane to be a family. He's got his half sister, his dad and his wicked stepmother... plus he finds his mother who abandoned him. And then eventually with Petra and Jane and their children like they showed in the last episode. Jane's Abuela has a lot of similarities with both of her daughters actually... but I think if I were to re-watch the current season I would notice some more parallels between her and Jane. The theme of her being a widow comes up a lot. Single moms are a big theme for the Villanueva women and being a widow is now seen as one of the common areas between Jane and her Abuela. Alba is Abuela's name. Lol. Okay. And Xo has a few pregnancy storylines. In the first season she thought she was pregnant with Rogelio's baby, at the beginning of this season she was pregnant with Rogelio's nemesis' baby. Normally I would say that this is just a plot point that keeps on repeating itself... but the way that they have it... it's definitely more symbols related to specific characters instead of just repeating different tropes and I appreciate that a lot... especially with all the plot twists of the show. It's just very cool.
One thing I didn't know was that Magda is played by the same actress that plays Terri on Three's Company... that was kind of cool.
Bruce is mentioned as early as the first episode too, which is kind of cool. That's another sort of similarity between Jane and Xo I think. Jane and Raphael's kiss happened before she was with Michael and before he was with Petra. So while their relationship does seem very sudden... they knew each other for a really long time and they sort of have a good understanding of each other... maybe more than their Significant others. Michael is always very supportive of Jane... but he didn't know that she was going to be a writer. And I think Bruce and Xo have a similar thing because she mentions him quite often much before she reconnects with Rogelio. It's cute.
And the end of the first season is just sooo soo good! I have a review of it somewhere on this blog... actually right here! I liked it a lot back then... and it still holds up now! The finales of this show are always really exciting!
Okay... I think that is everything I need to say about re-watching this series... it's brilliantly planned out. The CW has some really great shows and some great writers.
