I was really excited to see the newest Disney Live- Action remake... and it did not disappoint! I think I've seen all the movies so far except Pete's Dragon- which was already a live action movie. This is my favorite so far followed by Cinderella, Through The Looking Glass, Maleficent, The Jungle Book and the original Tim Burton Alice. This is the only real musical of the bunch, and the only one that I think I actually liked better than the Cartoon.
The cartoon is probably one of my favorites... Disney has made a lot of great movies since the Disney Renaissance... so idk if this is still the same on my list... but it's a really good one... but there's a lot that doesn't exactly make sense in the movie. The Beast was 10 when he didn't let the Enchantress into his house? That doesn't make much sense. Why'd she have to curse all the servants too? What's up with Mrs. Potts being Chip's mom? Is it Stockholm Syndrome because the Beast captured Belle and then she falls in love with him? What's with all of these things? It's a little weird... it's such a good movie that I'll ignore it... but let's circle back to that!
And this movie does circle back to that. The Enchantresses motives made more sense because in this movie The Beast was an adult and he was mean to her. The servants were changed because they knew his dad was very mean and when they saw beast becoming that way as well, they stood by and just let it happen like they were inanimate objects. Mrs. Potts being Chips mom worked a little bit better in this... they made a joke about her being his grandmother... it all made sense.
It was also visually stunning. The castle looked amazing. Be Our Guest was a great scene, the Village wear Belle lived was really pretty. It was definitely the best visualization of any of these Disney remakes and I liked that.
I also liked that there were some new songs and some changes to old songs. Beauty and The Beast really is a tale as old as time... it's been done before. This version alone was a cartoon and a very popular Broadway musical before... so it is nice that they added new elements to the story and new songs. Everyone sang really well too... I really liked all of the cast and everyone. For some reason though, I thought Chris Pine was in the movie and I was really excited for that because I thought he was great in Into The Woods... but he wasn't... little upsetting, but still okay. Emma Watson and Josh Gad were great. I really liked Ewan McGreggor's voice, Emma Thompson sounded a lot like Angela Lansbury... it just all worked really well!
The costumes and the sets were really beautiful too. I immediately thought "Okay I need everything Emma Watson is wearing for my wardrobe and everything in the beast's castle as decor! That would be the dream!" And that would be very nice... but yeah. this was good too!
That is pretty much everything I can think of! Hope you guys like this review... I'll have some posts on the feminist aspects of the movie on Scribbles About Feminism. And... probably a Throwback Thursday of the Cartoon soon also!
