This was an exciting one. I used to LOVE this movie... if you can even call it a movie... it is so good... I've seen it 100 times probably. I watched it every day for a while and it's just great. It's not for everyone probably... but it's so short that I think anyone could really enjoy it without being bored.
For such a short musical... it is very well paced. There are 3 acts, there's a clear storyline and arc for all the characters... there are lots of songs. If you don't like singing... you're not going to like this because there isn't much plot other than the singing... but if you love musicals... there is a lot of character development in the songs... its something that you can sing along to (heyyy... I understand the title now.) And it's very catchy. Even years since I've seen it last... I remembered all of the words.
It's also really funny. Spoilers: Not a happy ending... but there are really really funny moments all throughout the movie. Neil Patrick Harris and Nathan Fillion are hilarious in this... They're great in everything that they do. Felicia Day is also in this and she is great, lovely singing voice. Nathan Fillion is the superhero that is a total asshole... Neil Patrick Harris is a villain with a heart that just really wants to see change... but he isn't totally sure how to change things. His view is very undefined. He thinks The Status is Not Quo and wants to cause "anarchy... that I run"- so... his heart is in the right place... but he isn't really sure what to do.
It's also kind of hilarious that Dr. Horrible is trying to get in the Evil League of Evil with his role model- Bad Horse The Thoroughbred of Sin.... which is just hilarious. That might be one of my favorite jokes in the whole thing.
I think what makes this so easy for me to watch is that 1) I love anything musical but 2) It's just so short and it's pretty easy to follow and you could kind of have it on in the background and get everything still... might just be because I've seen it so many times... but that's what I did while watching this and it was really good.
Another cool thing... Dr. Horrible's lab is an actual house! Someone had their house designed like a mad scientist's laboratory for some TV show... and they used that house for filming. It was filmed during the Writer's Strike... so I kind of think a lot of the plot has to do with the writer's strike. I found out about this musical really late too... it had already been a thing for a while by the time I saw it... and I was so amazed I ended up watching it 3 times that day... it was a good musical!
Ohhh and the thing I noticed this time that I didn't really notice before: Spoilers coming up here... I had to watch it a second time because I wasn't sure if Dr. Horrible really wanted to kill Penny or not... because at the end he's kind of happy that he can be evil with no distractions... so that is my take on it. He didn't want to kill her because he said "No sign of penny, good I would do anything not to have her see." So... yeah that theory was off... but he is happy that he can just be evil with no feelings.
So yeah... I'm happy I saw this. Happy I still like it and can still recommend it. I think it's on youtube for free to watch... I got the DVD also.
