I know a little about writing tv and some things that are good and bad, and I know some random trivia facts that you may find interesting... so I'm going to mix them together and combine them.
A cold open is the scene that roles before the opening credits.
On The Office there was a Cold Open where Kevin makes a big bowl of chili for the office and spills it all over the floor. Mindy Kaling was one of the writers at the time and was very against this cold open. She fought the writers hard on it and threatened to quit because of it. They used it, she didn't quit. Everyone was fine. She writes about this in her book Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me.
There was actually a sitcom made called Heil Honey about Hitler and Ava Braun living next to a Jewish family. It was either cancelled after 1 episode or never aired for obvious reasons. It was recorded however, and a few years ago I watched it on youtube. If you think it sounds offensive... it is even worse than that. Hitler was actually the protagonist of the show I believe and the Jewish neighbors were portrayed as offensive stereotypes... other than all the offensiveness it was just a bad show all together. The jokes weren't funny at all and it was really really bad.
I actually researched this while googling the worst tv shows ever. Another show that made the list is one I actually watched and liked... and I feel like maybe if I watched it again I wouldn't like it so much. Kath and Kim which was on NBC and starred Molly Shannon and Selma Blair. I actually like Selma Blair in comedy... she has an Aubrey Plaza vibe. I love Molly Shannon. One of the reason why people didn't love the show was the costumes. They were really really awful. Like terribly bad. I could see that being distracting, and that is one thing that can make a tv show really bad.
Another thing I've noticed a lot with TV shows are that... I really appreciate when they earn the moment to have a happy ending. Sometimes there are good shows, The Carrie Diaries and Trophy Wife... 2 shows I liked a lot... didn't quite earn the happy endings at the end. There wasn't enough struggle. The more complicated the conflict is for the active character to achieve... the more interesting the episode. One of the great things about The Last Man on Earth is that each episode starts and ends with a good hook. It leaves you wondering "ohhh what's gonna happen! What is going to happen!" and then leaves you with "wow... whats going to happen next!" I always want a little more with that show and the writers are just so brilliant. One of the best shows on tv.
Gomez and Morticia Addams were the first TV Couple with a sex life.
The X Files is the first TV Show that had an actual movie released in theaters in the middle of the series. They planned it so that you could see the movie if you didn't watch the tv show, but if you did watch the show, you would still appreciate it. A Lot of the beginning of the 6th season reflects that movie too... so thats kind of cool.
The only shows where the entire main cast has earned Emmy's for their performance are All In The Family, Will and Grace, and The Golden Girls.
In Amy Poehler's book, she mentions that she would often try to do "bits" in order to avoid getting nervous while her category was announced during the Emmy's. She even brought mustaches for all her fellow nominees one year so that they could join in this bit with her... except Sarah Silverman. She had already packed a mustache... as one should for most events. The year Melissa McCarthy won they did a whole "beauty pagent" theme that they planned, with some permission from the writers. One year she and Julia Louis Dryfuss hugged each other and switched acceptance speeches... so Julia thanks Will Arnett and her sons Archie and Abel... and then says "ohhh wait..."
Julia Louis Dryfuss is also known for her bits. One year during her wins she had Tony Hale whispered her entire speech to her the way that he does on Veep. Hale also won that year I believe... so that is cool.
There are only 12 people that have achieved an EGOT, meaning they have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and a Tony. Some of those people include Rita Moreno, Whoopie Goldberg, Audrey Hepurn, and Mel Brooks.
The only 2 characters of the main cast on Breaking Bad who never meet are Walter Jr and Jesse Pinkman. Coincidence? Nothing on good tv is a coincidence. I think its because they're both "sons" to Walter, but they are the connection between his real life and his drug life... and he doesn't want them to cross.
There have been a lot of cartoon shows made out of R rated movies, that are supposed to be for kids. I don't remember exactly all of them... but one I remember was the movie Friday... which seemed weird to me because I don't think I've ever seen the whole movie... but its inappropriate. Doesn't the whole concept have to do with drugs... actually I'm going to look up that cracked article now... and probably get sucked into that world.
Okay that was according to Smosh's website actually... not on Cracked... so I'm not super sure it was actually a children's show... but thats messed up! There was also a Robocop one too... so weird.
And I probably have more useless tv trivia knowledge... but I'm gonna leave it here for now.
Byeee!
