I'm not saying that this is going to be the worst show ever... I don't want to judge it before it goes on the air... but the trailer is certainly an interesting concept that will be hard to pull off.
So the trailer starts out with a man saying that he believes his friend is Jack The Ripper... and that this friend has a Time Machine and he is going to present day NYC to kill people there... so yeah... that is basically the whole concept of the show... and when I saw the trailer last night... I actually had to go back and rewind to make sure that this was all really happening. I'm still kind of astounded by it.
Now... I can kind of see what the show is going for here. I think Mystical Realism is becoming very "in" for TV right now... and I love that. A lot of Science Fiction shows are gaining popularity, Stranger Things, Westworld and things like that... and I think that is what the show is going for. Plus there are shows like the new one on NBC about the superheroes and The Good Place that are following that format, but in a comedic way. That I think is really really awesome because I like writing that sort of thing... and that's good. Even A Series Of Unfortunate Events has that same feel... there's just a lot going on with that...
However... time travel isn't really "in" right now. I think its mostly for TV... for movies, its probably okay... but for TV I would avoid any sort of time travel or immortality plot like the plague. Doctor Who got it right. Forever on ABC was really good and that got cancelled, there's a show on NBC called Timeless that I've also heard is really good... but the ratings aren't very good... so I just don't think audiences are quite connecting with the Time Travel plot and I would put this show in DANGER for that alone.
Also... this seems to have a lot going on. I think it would be interesting if they did a Jack The Ripper Story. I think it would be interesting if they showed a modern day Jack The Ripper type story... I think the idea of Jack the Ripper using Time Travel is just a little bit too much. It could end up being amazing. Maybe if they have the 2 stories of Jack the Ripper in the Past and Present (future?) going on at the same time similar to how they do Once Upon a Time or Quantico... that could be interesting to see... but I still don't think it should be the same person using that through time travel. Idk I just think it's a little too weird. I think it's going to be kind of hard to pull off.
Last problem with this show... Why call it Time After Time? That's like the worst name for this show. If it was a show with a similar plot to the Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves movie "The Lake House" it might work... but a show about Jack the Ripper that is named after a Cyndi Lauper song? I don't think that is the best name you could think of for this... especially since I think it will be more focused on the Jack the Ripper aspect than the Time Travel aspect.
I think this is going to be one of those shows that everyone is going to talk about being the worst show ever on a major network. Or maybe they'll totally pull it off and it will be absolutely incredible... but somehow I don't really think that they'll be able to do that.
So what do you guys think? Best thing ever or total failure? I cannot wait to watch and review it! I'm probably going to watch all 3 episodes ( I don't mean to be mean... but Wicked City only lasted 3 episodes... I can't imagine this being any more.) I'm really rooting for this to be amazing and for me to be proven wrong. I'm sure there's a reason that this show got made, and I can't imagine them making it just to tank... so I'm thinking maybe it will be surprisingly brilliant or everyone will love it even if it is bad... so yeah. Cannot wait to see it!
