So... I've mentioned a few times that I kind of like Hamilton... just a little bit... lol. JK that is an understatement... I LOVE it! Anyway, I really can't say enough good things about this play or the cast... it's just even better than the hype!
I saw it on a Sunday... and Sunday is a little bit different for Hamilton. They have a different actor playing Hamilton... which is pretty cool actually. The guy that I saw was AMAZING and it was his Broadway debut! So it gives actors that are lesser known a fair chance to be a star on the hottest show on broadway. The cast was pretty star-studded in general if you ask me though... maybe not the biggest stars, I'm sure they all will be big stars when they're done with this... but yeah. Jordan Fisher was in Greece Live and he was in a Disney Channel Musical, he played John Laurens and Phillip Hamilton. Taryn Killam from SNL played King George. The woman that played Angelica was Nina in the original cast of In The Heights... so I think I actually saw her in that. I don't think there were any other names I recognized from anything else... but they were all really good... perfect actually. Taryn Killam was BORN to play King George. He was so funny and animated... I was thinking that 3 songs for King George were a little too many... but with him I was sooo excited to see King George that it just worked. Jordan Fisher was AMAZING! He's such a great singer and his mannerisms, especially as John Laurens were really funny. He's also super hot. The actress that played Eliza had a great singing voice and she was just really great. Everyone in it I thought was just as good if not better than the original. The Aaron Burr was so vicious! It was just really really good.
So yeah aside from an incredibly talented cast... the rest of it was just really cool too. Aside from one scene, everything that was on the soundtrack was onstage... and nothing else. There was no dialogue outside of the songs, it was just non-stop, the same way that Hamilton lived. And that was really powerful to see on stage. They transitioned the songs really well. The stage was also designed like a turntable, which was really a cool thing that just added to so much of the story! That was definitely worth seeing... not sure if that will be there on the tour or in the Chicago version... I would imagine it's at least in the Chicago version... but yeah. That was really unique and just added soo soo much to the story. Especially to the duel at the end... that was just really cool.
I'm not quite sure what my favorite song is... before seeing the show I really loved "The Room Where It Happens" but after seeing the show... I think it might be My Shot. There were just so many songs that when they were performed live it just made me think "Wow... this is definitely worth the price of the ticket." And My Shot was really one that I thought was above and beyond anything I've ever seen on stage... and wayyy more than I was expecting. There are so many scenes where a lot is going on and a lot of different characters have something going on that it's just really cool to see onstage. As I said, the King George songs were better on stage... Burn was different than I thought it would be. The end was very very powerful onstage... it was just really good. Even though I know every line... except the one scene that isn't on the soundtrack... it was all just very powerful to watch onstage.
I'm probably going to do another review of this on my feminist blog that might give a few more details... but not in a spoiler way... but the way the show is choreographed really shows the importance of Eliza to Alexander Hamilton. There were some songs that I heard from the original off-broadway production of Hamilton that really showed Eliza's importance... if you listen to the original Schuyler Defeated, you can definitely get a feel for just how much she did... I can see why this was cut because really, it over explained the story and the choreography kind of tells it all. Idk if it's exactly choreography... just she always puts on his jacket and then in another scene they sort of show a contrast to that when Hamilton is doing something stupid... so yeah. That kind of spoke volumes to me.
I think that is everything I want to say... if you sit in the Orchestra seats, the way that the Richard Rogers Theater is, its kind of like the Mezzanene seats and there is only one bathroom downstairs and at one point when I was in line they had it looped by the stage. The line does go very fast because they do have a lot of stalls... I didn't get to use it because I didn't think I would make it to my seat in time for "What did I miss" at intermission... and I think it's exciting to see the actor that plays Lafayette as Thomas Jefferson right away in Act 2... so I would have been upset to miss that. Lol not really a review of the play itself... just kind of worth mentioning because I was wondering about it myself.
Ohhh wait last thing: I think the other cool thing about seeing a play where they have a new actor in the lead role so often is that you can really see how talented the rest of the cast is. Particularly for the roles of Phillip, Eliza , Burr and Washington... its probably hard to do more intimate one on one scenes and when you get used to doing it with one person every night and then they switch it... idk I think it really says something about those actors that they're able to do that so well!
