So I've mentioned that I like Master of None a few times and I wasn't going to do a review because I thought I'd covered it... but then I finished the season and I was like "huh. I could say more about this." So I figured I would!
So this is Aziz Ansari's new Netflix show. I'm a fan of Aziz's comedy. I saw him live once and he was amazing. Love him on Parks and Rec, and this show sounded funny even if it wasn't just Aziz.
The show is kind of about nothing. It isn't quite about Nothing I guess its sort of about growing up... as a grown up. Theres a lot to it that are real life scenarios. Some of them are things everyone goes through, some are a little specific. Like there is an episode where Aziz's character Dev moves in with his girlfriend and they start fighting over little things. I feel like that is something a majority of people can relate to. If you live with a guy or girl or not... if you fight a lot with your guy or girl... idk it seems like something that is common. But then there is an episode where Dev and his friend Brian realize how much their immigrant parents had to give up so that they have a good life... and that's kind of a specific thing that I found interesting.
It discusses a lot of issues too. There is an episode about the roles that Indian actors get on television and how offensive that is, and there is an episode about feminism that is absolutely BRILLIANTLY written and has the best cold open ever. Those were 2 of my favorite episodes because they shed light on real issues in a really real way, but also in a funny way. It was great.
And that is another brilliant thing about the show. There are some dramatic episodes, but its still always a comedy. Not many shows balance that very well... but this show did a great job of it I think. The finale of the show is actually pretty dramatic and there aren't really a ton of laughs... but the Cold Open is super funny and shows Dev trying to find a place to get tacos from for a long time and then not even getting tacos from the best place because they ran out of tortillas! And that actually does in a weird way kind of show whats going on in the rest of the episode. Not in an obvious way, but in a way I didn't figure out until just now. Lol. This show gets deep.
Another kind of nerdy thing I found pretty funny was that the show kind of explains and over explains little things that other shows would just sort of jump over. I like that a lot because its only 10 episodes and its not like in American Horror Story where just suddenly one person is sleeping with the other. For example in one episode Dev doesn't get a role and in the next episode he's in that same role... and he explains the story of it to another actor on the set and he's like "that's a really boring story." And its just kind of funny. So many shows just jump over things like that when they're short and its like "well when did that happen." This show explains when that did happen... but not in a boring way, its a pretty fun way. Oddly enough, that was one of my favorite things about the show. I thought it was really funny and I like that we could have just accepted it... but they briefly went into detail on it and it was good. I thought it worked. Not many shows do that and I feel like they should because it can be done in a really funny and interesting way!
Also... this doesn't really take place in the Starry Eyed New York that a lot of shows have it as. This is in the real Pizza Rat, guys jerking off on the subway New York. And I always appreciate that because New York is beautiful and fun and all of that... but its also kind of disgusting and I love both parts about that.
So... yeah. If you've bingewatched this, let me know. I didn't really binge watch it. I kept kind of forgetting about it until 2am and then I'd watch an episode and I'd want to watch another episode... but then I'd be like "I can't stay up till 3 watching Master of None." But I did a few times cause that is how I am... Lol.
