Okay...so now I haven't actually seen infinity war yet... and I have somewhat an idea of how it ends- but I have not seen the movie so I really can't spoil it in this post... so if you haven't seen Infinity War yet... don't fret! I won't be talking about it... at least not the end of it... I'll maybe make a mention of it... but I haven't seen it yet- so take it with a grain of salt I guess because really idk if I'll end up liking that or not... I don't know what to expect of it! But yeah... anyway on to my main point. I'll probably be spoiling Civil War and Age of Ultron a little... so if you haven't seen those be warned... but other than that- this is it.
So... the one tiny complaint I have about a lot of these Marvel Movies is that as amazing as they are... sometimes the ends are a little bit lacklustre. It isn't like it's a bad finale scene or something... but for the most part... they're very open ended. Obviously... you probably don't need me to explain this too much... but that is because it isn't over yet- it's part of a bigger universe. They're making more movies connected to these ones- so of corse they need to leave some parts a little bit open.
I think out of the ones I've seen so far (note: I'm writing this before I'm writing the Spider Man: Homecoming Review... so even though I've reviewed that on the blog... at the time I'm writing this I don't know the end.) Civil War probably had the least satisfying of any ending. There's this huge war between all of the Avengers... and now half of them are considered War Criminals and they need to go in hiding... and they just kind of end it there. There's a big fight between Iron Man and Bucky... and that's it... it's a good movie and it introduces Black Panther and Spider Man... so that's important and cool... but I just wish the end was a little bit better than half The Avengers are war criminals and Stephen writes a note for Tony... Boom: Credits and then the after credits scene with Spider Man. Ughhhhh. It just kind of upsets me.
Plus there was no mention of The Avengers that weren't there. I guess we were supposed to know that The Hulk was in hiding... but Thor wasn't really mentioned at all... and I'm guessing Ragnarock was happening simultaneously- so that must be why... and that makes it a little bit better... and that's my next point...
These somewhat unsatisfying endings are for a good reason... and that's for the greater good of the MCU I suppose. And I do think movies like Thor Ragnarock work better because of the unsatisfying endings of Civil War and Age of Ultron. I think Age of Ultron's unsatisfying ending helped build the tension a little for Civil War. Tony was the one that made the big mistake in Ultron and that I think motivates his reasoning in Civil War as well as kind of showing who he is as a character. He doesn't want to always be an Avenger... but he knows he probably will always have to be and he's just trying to protect himself as much as possible... so that's nice.
And I don't think the unsatisfying ends really take away from the movies themselves... I think they make it a little bit harder for me to remember exactly what happened in the movies because of the end... and that's part of why I enjoy watching these movies out of order... which maybe I'll get to at some point... but I still enjoy the movies just as much... I just have a harder time explaining what happened and it's a little more challenging for me to review I guess because I'm like "wait how did that end? It didn't? Okay... that's cool!"
I do think that the sacrifice of an amazing ending to a movie is worth the buildup for the next movie in the MCU... but I also really love when movies have a satisfying end. So far I think Doctor Strange and Black Panther end in a good way for me... so I'm guessing origin movies are pretty safe for this... but also Thor Ragnarock is probably a little bit higher on my list of favorite movies because it wasn't an origin story- but it did have a very satisfying end.
So that's just what I feel about those so far! So if you hear me review a cinematic universe movie and say "Ohhh that ending wasn't satisfying" just know this is what I'm talking about... at least I think this is what I'm talking about!
