Okay- so you guys know Marvel has kind of been my recent obsession... and I've already done some reviews for some of the movies I've seen and loved... but I'm going to dedicate every Monday to some kind of Marvel movie or TV Show. I probably won't get into all of the X Men movies- but I will do some movies and shows outside of the MCU- like Deadpool, Jessica Jones, and some of the earlier Spider Man Movies!
Anyway... I was pretty excited that this came to Netflix because I've never actually seen a Thor movie and I know that this is kind of a lighter and funnier Marvel movie. I really like the director of the movie- Taika Waititi- he directed one of the funniest movies of all time which is a mockumentary about Vampires called What We Do In The Shadows. Highly recommend checking that movie out! It's really funny.
Besides being a comedy... This completely changes everything that Thor is known for. Thor is known for his long hair, his hammer, ruling asgard, being Odin's son...in this movie he loses his hammer, has his hair cut, loses control of Asgard and loses Odin... so- there's a lot kind of stacked against Thor. Besides that while his sister Hela is tearing Asgard to pieces- he's captured by Jeff Goldbloom and forced to be one of his "Champions" and fight against another powerful hero that no one has survived against... The Incredible Hulk!
So of corse The Hulk doesn't kill Thor in battle... but it is really funny to see The Hulk as The Hulk for so long and not as Bruce Banner... and then it gets even funnier because when he turns back into being Bruce Banner he doesn't know what was happening the whole time he was Hulk. And Thor had to tell both of them that they were his favorite... it was just really funny... and Mark Ruffalo just played it so well. It was just really, really funny. It's definitely some of my favorite moments between the two avengers.
Hela was also such a great villain.Cate Blanchett looked AMAZING in this but she also played such an interesting villain. And I liked that the movie kind of focused on Thor's adventure to try to get back to fight Hela and then on Hela explaining why she hated Odin and why she wanted her revenge. It was just kind of a cool way to tell 2 stories.
One part I think I could have done without was the scene with Dr. Strange. It's not that I disliked it... it's just that we saw it already in Dr. Strange... I didn't think we really needed to see the same scene again in this movie. I'm usually not one to stay past the end credits in these Marvel Movies- but I do watch it at home... maybe I missed something with that... but I just didn't think the movie needed it. It kind of slowed it down a little bit and I think it added something to the movie Dr. Strange- since this was the first movie with Dr. Strange in it- it was nice to see another avenger connected to Dr. Strange- and it made sense that they would exist in the same movie... but I just didn't love it in this Thor movie. It didn't tell us anything we didn't know already and...it just wasn't the best use of the character in my opinion.
I would say this might be one of my favorite MCU movies that I've seen so far... I am not even sure what my order would be right now. I was going to attempt ranking it- but TBH I really need to see the first Avengers movie again. It's one of the only Marvel movies I've ever seen in theaters... and I feel like I can only kind of remember it. So strange.
Anyway- that's my review on Thor: Ragnarock... maybe I can go more into depth on this movie and other future Marvel Movies on these Marvel Monday posts... but for now I just wanted to do this review and let you guys know to check this out on Netflix for sure!
Bye!
