So this book/screenplay just came out on Harry Potter's Birthday and I was really excited to read it. I haven't actually read all of the Harry Potter books... but with Harry Potter and the Wizarding World, there is so much story to be told there. And JK Rowling has said this will be the end of Harry Potter... and Idk how I feel about that to be honest. On one hand: I liked the way that the last Harry Potter book ended and I'm happy that they aren't going to continue it too much. I feel like a lot of things that continue the story after the fact kind of change the ending of what you originally liked too much. For example: American Horror Story... I didn't like when they brought Queenie back this season and (spoilers) killed her off because that changed the ending of Coven and now that kind of lessens that season a little. I know many people didn't like Coven much... but I wanted all the characters to live and I don't think that added to the story (the way that Pepper's Story on Freakshow did) it just took away from it... and that makes me sad.
Okay now away from that tangent... I don't really think this adds or takes away from the Original Harry Potter series at all. I think it just tells another story and gives you some insight as to where all the characters are now. A few characters that were not dead at the end of the 7th book had died by this time... but I don't think it really ruined anything per se. This follows the Harry Potter books well and its a good complimentary play about it... but it isn't as good as the others... but for what it is I think they did a good job.
I don't want to give away the plot at all... its going to be kind of impossible to get around that... but it revolves around Harry Potter's youngest son Albus Severus Potter and his friend Scorpius Malfoy. I think Scorpius was my favorite character and I feel like I had a new appreciation for the Malfoy Family because of this book. I think it'd be cool to see a book about the Malfoy Family... that's different. But yeah... this was a good pairing I think and the new characters and the new villain in this were very interesting.
Because this is a play and because its just me reading the play and not actually seeing it live (btw... if this play shows in your country or if it travels anywhere around you... you need to see it! It is magical and just for the fact that they have an Old Folks Home for older witches and wizards is reason enough to make this a play you want to see live.) It is a little fast paced and a little rushed. Like the ending especially and with the villain of the play... they could have done a little more. This isn't the same way that a Harry Potter Book would have ended. Its a little more like the ending of an episode of Scooby Doo if you ask me... its not that intense... but this isn't a Harry Potter book... this is a play... so in that sense it makes sense.
Jk Rowling also didn't write this alone. It was her story along with 2 other guys and one of those 2 guys wrote the actual script. So I don't know how involved JK Rowling was with this actual story. Her name could be credited just because there are actual lines from the last book in it. Its based off of her characters. She could have just said "Let's have Albus and Scorpius play with time turners" and this is what happened... I'm not sure. "Story By" is kind of a loose term... so keep in mind its not just her involved. The characters talk a little different than how she might have written them... its a little bit different. It isn't like its just a fan fiction story, it was written by actual professionals with some involvement from the creator of the Harry Potter stories and she let this be published and produced as a play with her name on it. That is not something JK Rowling does lightly. So... keep that in mind.
It was a fun and easy read. It might not be the best Harry Potter work out there... but it is really quite good. And just seeing the Harry Potter universe from a different side of things... and you get to see other characters differently and you see Harry and Ginny as parents... its all quite exciting.
My big issue with this was Ron... he was just the comic relief in this play and not much else to him. In the American Version Ron could be played by Larry The Cable Guy and there are just fart noises when he speaks... it was just hard to see Ron that way and its like "Was Ron always this lame?" Because he was pretty lame in this... I would have liked to see him do one cool thing but he really didn't. That was the only thing where I thought this story really took away from the original stories. Ron was just not cool at all. I mean he ran a joke shop... which is cool but no.
I think this play is kind of exciting for the World of Harry Potter. I think the Wizarding World will always exist in some way, shape and form. I think JK Rowling will always have something new to come up with for Potter fans and I think this is a great sign of whats to come. Its really cool and they did a good job with it. I'm excited to see Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them now. I think those movies will be really great.
I'm hoping they release a copy of the Fantastic Beasts book along with art from the new movie as like a coffee table book... that's something I want.
But yeah! Harry Potter is Timeless and I think this Wizarding World will live on forever... and I hope it does. I think that will be awesome!
