Scribbles About TV: Weird Loners Review

Since there are so many new shows out that I was reviewing, I didn't know if I'd have anything to review now... but Weird Loners came on last night and I was actually pretty excited to see it.

I love Becki Newton from Ugly Betty and the guy that played Dave on Happy Endings is also in this and the other 2 cast members looked pretty familiar too. One of the guest stars was David Wain, who I'm a big big fan of... so it had potential...

And I think it does have potential! I'm sure there will be a lot of fun things happening in this show... but I did not love the Pilot.

The characters are all fine... but they didn't have that many layers to them... I expect some growth from the characters, the pilot had them all becoming friends... which is a difficult thing to do. Its much easier to establish them as friends and then whatever else happens just happens. This they had to show how their "weird" little group bonded and came together.

Becki Newton is who I would say is the main star, and I think she's really really funny. Loved her on Ugly Betty, loved her on How I Met Your Mother, and on Last Call With Carson Daily she was funny (yes I actually watch Last Call With Carson Daily occasionally). I'm really happy she's starring in this... but her character was weird to me. It starts out with her on a date with a guy acting very serious when they've only known each other for 2 days. And then she says she was on a Singles Cruise but she has a man that proposed to her. And she accepted over the phone I guess, and even though it seemed like she had been cheating on him already, when she makes out with Dave thats when she's like "this is really bad" and then breaks it off with her fiance. Who is played by David Wain, who was not in the episode nearly enough. He could have been so funny but his character wasn't Wainy enough.

And this was supposed to feel relatable because "not everyone has it together in their 30s" and I'm in my 20s and I don't have it together at all... but I found these characters unrelatable and weird. Its like "ohhh I want a relationship. I'm afraid of commitment. Why am I not Married?" It was just very odd.

Also... it was a lot like friends. Like... A LOT like the Friends pilot. There were clear differences, as I said, its cool that they showed them becoming friends instead of just establishing that they were already friends... like they did on Friends... lol. There was someone leaving their fiance, The girls become roommates, the guys are both sad (like Ross) and it was just kind of like a weird take on the Friends Pilot... not necessarily a bad thing. Creative and different, I just don't quite see it. I was just kind of like "haven't I seen this show before." And yeah I have.

So... maybe I'm just getting tired of this show format where its like a group of friends hanging out and talking about relationship problems. Its not bad, I think it has potential to be a good series and I'll probably watch another episode... but its nothing different. I'm not in love with it. And everything about it should work, I like the cast, the writers seem funny enough. I'm sure everyone involved with it is very talented and wonderful... but this just isn't anything that exciting.

Keep in mind, I'm judging it a little bit harshly. I didn't think I'd like TV at all after Parks and Rec and 30 Rock Ended, but then Unbreakble Kimmy Schmidt and The Last Man on Earth proved me wrong.

It kind of makes me feel like how I felt about Super Fun Night. It wasn't necessarily bad, everyone involved was pretty funny... but it wasn't particularly good and I got tired quite quickly.

So if you like the format of just a bunch of weird and quirky friends hanging out and doing nothing together... You'll probably like it. If you're getting a bit tired of that, you may not love it. I just thought it was kind of blahh... but it has potential to be good, and I applaud the writers for trying something a little harder to write and a little different. I'm giving it a C+... But as I said I'm sure it will be better.

Hope this review was helpful!

Weekly Wrap Up 7.30.17

Sunday 7.23.17  Sunday was a really good day… it was kind of a lazy day for me… but my dad pretty much finished most of the painting in my room… he ran out of paint before he could totally finish it up… so he’ll finish that up soon… my mom is going to the paint store tomorrow… so hopefully he can finish it up then.  He also made some really fantastic barbecue pork… it was going to be pulled pork… but the pulling process didn’t really work… I kind of prefer the texture of it sliced instead of pulled…. idk. I like pulled pork… but this sliced pork was really delicious and flavorful and good.  We went for Starbucks and Ice Cream too… which was fun. Starbucks sends a lot of bonus stars offers after 2… so even though we go in the morning- we have to go after 2 because then we’ll get bonus stars, which my dad uses in New York because it’s a little more expensive there.  And then the ice cream… nutella ice cream with crushed oreos and marshmallow…it was del...

Rereading My Favorite Thing I Wrote In College

Hey guys! I'd say "today's post is a little different" but they're all kind of different to begin with... so this might end up being the same- or at least something that can fit into this blog in a nice way. So I don't want to post the actual thing that I wrote... but in my college Creative Writing Class that I took at 21 we needed to write a fantastical realism short story. And I wrote something that I always liked. The lead character was a smart and sassy woman... the fantastical elements were exciting and unique... and the story as a whole had a cute ending and a good message... and I really liked the way that I took what happened in my real life and changed it into this amazing and fantastical thing. Re-reading it... it was still pretty good. I actually liked the ending a little bit better because it had a nice message about believing in yourself that I kind of just snuck in there without much thought... and there was a cute little love story. I liked ...

Throwback Thursday: The Incredibles

This is one of the more underrated movies in the Pixar Universe... thatI think is actually getting more popular now than it was back when it was released... so that's good. I think it really stands the test of time... but it still isn't one of my favorites. This movie I think is pretty cool because it was the first time Pixar really used humans. When I was little I thought "Toys, Bugs, Monsters, Fish... the next movie will be about dogs!" And I was surprised it was this! I didn't know Pixar could do that! But I guess technically its about heroes and not humans... but then Pixar began to show more humans in their world and The Pixar Theory was started... and yeah. I just kind of want to state my opinion on the Pixar Theory here too cause why not: I don't believe that Pixar set out to create this elaborate world with all the movies connected... but I do still believe it exists in some way shape of form. It all adds up and checks out... so for me... somehow t...
