I was super excited about this movie because I'm a huge fan of Melissa McCarthy, I love Mark Duplass, I think Susan Sarandon is surprisingly funny and even though the trailer and title don't give a lot about this movie away, it just seemed like a super funny and fun movie.
The movie started out on a funny note: Melissa McCarthy in a car singing along to the song Your Love and then she hits a deer. The deer doesn't die but it made me snort in the beginning. It was just funny and right off the bat, it seemed like a movie you can watch years from now and still find funny. It's like Superbad and The Hangover in that aspect sort of: it already felt nostalgic before it started.
I was super happy that Melissa McCarthy was the lead of this movie, because as funny as she is she is usually just the wacky sidekick or more of like a co-lead. Although I think this is still kind of a co-lead movie for her and Susan Sarandon, and McCarthy does play a very wacky character, Susan Sarandon is the wacky grandma sidekick. I thought it was a perfect duo because McCarthy does play wacky characters so very well, but she should definitely be the lead in more movies. She's so funny, she is another actress I consider worth seeing in theaters. I think she's great.
I also mentioned that I'm a huge fan of Mark Duplass, and he is someone that is great at being the good guy, but he's also great at playing a jerk. When I heard he was the love interest in this movie, I had no idea what to expect from him... and I don't really want to spoil anything, but he's totally crush-worthy. He reminds me of someone I know and that makes me like him even more. He's just so cute and awkward and he really does a great job in this movie... I mean that being said, he might have been a funnier jerk. His character was really sweet and he was the type of guy Tammy needed... But at the same time it would have been funny to see him as a jerk. I guess his dad was sort of the jerk and there's another male jerk in this movie, so it wouldn't make sense for everyone to be the jerk... But it still would have been funny. Anyway he was good, he added a lot of heart to the movie and it kind of balanced out a lot of the sadder moments of the film.
Which brings me to another part of the movie that is important to consider: this movie does have it's sad moments. It's not so sad that it stops being a comedy at any point, but Susan Sarandon's character is an older woman that happens to be an alcoholic with a pretty serious problem. It gets real at parts. They start their road trip together in part because her character is sick and dying and she wants to see Niagra Falls. The movie is a great road trip comedy, and it is filled with nonstop laughs. That's one great and unique thing about this movie. Even in its more serious moments: it finds a way to pull it off in the funniest way possible. Melissa McCarthy wrote the movie with her husband and I think they did a great job making this movie everything that it is. It is the perfect comedy in that way and I really love it.
All in all I really loved this movie. I saw it with my mom, which might seem awkward at parts but it really wasn't that badly awkward. It's a great movie with great laughs. Highly recommend it!
