Remember the Dumb Starbucks craze a few months ago? That was created by comedian Nathan Fielder for an episode of his show Nathan For You. I knew this story a few months ago, it was no secret really. I had heard of Nathan Fielder before but I had never actually watched the show before a few weeks ago. And I really like it. It reminds me a little of Review. Nathan isn't playing a character the way that Andy Daily was, but he is kind of a character similar to Forrest McNeil. Well I mean I doubt Nathan is like this in real life. In a nutshell it's kind of like Review and Ali G but with a more deadpan humor and it's focused on helping local businesses. It's really funny and original and I'm glad the Dumb Starbucks story brought more recognition to the show and Nathan Fielder himself.
Anyway I was obviously interested in the Dumb Starbucks story, I definitely would have gone to the NY location had there been one, and I like what Nathan is doing for YOU or for us lol. I know there's a huge line... But hey Dan Harmon waited in line for it, so you are in good company lol.
The episode follows Nathan helping a local owner of a coffee house called Hellio's Cafe and he says it's basically impossible for people to recognize a small coffee shop when there are big places like Starbucks everywhere, so what if we trick people into thinking it's Starbucks. This seems illegal, but it is protected under Parody Law, the same law that allows Weird Al to do his songs. He said that the Dumb Starbucks was really an art gallery... And really that's deep. Nathan didn't realize how deep people would see that: coffee is art. Small coffee shops are all works of art in themselves being destroyed by places like Starbucks. Then Nathan said the fame kind of got to his head, he got shut down by Starbucks and basically he had to stop, but still supported the local business in the end.
The show is just majorly funny, this episode was super interesting... And it's one of those stories I like hearing a lot about. My dad loves Starbucks and he didn't really support the idea of Dumb Starbucks until I told him it was created by a comedian for a Comedy Central show. I thought that was funny.
Alright that's about it, definitely check out Nathan for You and Comedy Central in general cause they have some funny shit!
Byeeeee!
