21 Jump Street is probably all around one of my favorite movies and I was really excited about the sequel and it actually looked really really good, but at the same time I was a tad disappointed in this. I think I'm seeing it again, I think it will be better after seeing it a second time... but overall it wasn't as great as the original.
Now the thing I didn't like about it, was actually pretty funny. It was weird because it was a movie about making movies, and that's something I usually enjoy... but it was a little too apparent here. For example there were lots of references about doing "exactly what you did last time, just in college now." And sequels can often be just the same people doing the exact same things, but in different settings. The challenge was that Schmidt and Jenko didn't want to do the exact same thing as last time. There were also some jokes about things being too expensive and that they didn't know that they could afford to do stuff, which I'm imagining has to do with the movie budget. There were just a lot of those kind of meta jokes about making a movie that I think took away from the actual storyline of the movie itself.
I thought that 21 Jump Street kind of redefined the genre of the Buddy Cop movie and it set the standard for action comedies. It was just soo funny and such a clever storyline that it is kind of hard for this to live up to those amazing standards. I thought the most clever part of the first movie was the concept of these crazy drugs that were completely made up in the world of the movie... but this time it was just a little different. It was still super funny, but its not quite as funny seeing that joke again. If this fictional drug was in the first movie, I would probably think that it was the funnier fake drug, but its just that it was literally the same joke in a different movie. It wasn't quite as funny.
I also think it incorporated a little too many of the same things of the original movie, which again distracts from the story of this new one. I love Rob Riggle and I thought he was hilarious in the first movie and in this movie, but I didn't totally think he needed to be in the movie. They could have done the job without him. Also they made Ice Cube's role a little bit bigger, which is funny and Ice Cube was really great in it... but at the same time, he wouldn't have been my first pick for a larger role. I would have rather seen Nick Offerman's character a little more, but I guess it makes more sense for Ice Cube to be more prominent. Idk... just didn't feel right.
Overall the movie was really funny and if you liked the first one, you will probably like this one also... but it wasn't half as good as the first one, its not anything you really need to rush out to see in theaters, and it was a little disappointing.
The end credits of this movie were probably my favorite part. They had a really funny sequence that did tie all the meta-jokes of the movie together.
I would probably give this movie a B- if I were to rate it because it was funnier than a C... but overall not the best movie you'll see this summer probably.
