So I watched My Big Fat Greek Wedding... the original movie, not the sequel... and this is one of my favorite movies ever. Its the movie I watch pretty much any time its on... but its been a while since I've really sat down and watched it... so I figured I'd do that again... I was cleaning my room also, but mostly I was watching the movie and I feel like it was a little different to me.
I always think thought this was a funny movie, but now I think its really relatable. Maybe because my sister just got married so I was just in a Big Fat Greek Wedding... but I watched it and I'm like "Those sort of things happen all the time!" Not just family- related... but like when she was getting Ian the Brochure's and she fell... that's so funny! And the moments between his family and her family... its just really funny. I don't know why but for some reason those were the parts that really stuck out to me in this viewing.
Angelo and Nikki were really funny too. The way they argued back and forth... and the actress that played Nikki had really funny moments when she wasn't even talking. Just her physical acting was so funny and I think that's really hard and I totally appreciate when someone can do that properly. Athena and Nick were characters I was paying more attention to also... they're really funny! Athena is in it more than I thought too and she's pretty funny!
I also think it was probably improvised quite a bit! I know Andrea Martin improvised some of her famous lines and moments and I could kind of get the feeling that a lot of the lines were improvised. It just seemed like it was very low-budget and that some of the lines were written the day of... probably not but I could see that happening.
And there are a lot of jokes I don't really get because I don't speak Greek... but I think that's really cool that they kept some of those jokes in there because there aren't a lot of greek comedies out there and I think this is probably a pretty accurate depiction of a Greek Family in Chicago. My family is a lot like in the movie... so I can see that it is pretty much just showing a real family... only slightly exaggerated. Lol.
I know this is a better movie... I know its more well written and that it has a lot of heart in it and its sweet... but I still think I actually like the sequel more. I really liked the scene with the Stefana crowns in the sequel... that made me tear up a little. Coming from a Greek family, thats a really meaningful and beautiful ceremony. My sister and her husband did it during their wedding, my parents and grandparents did that... all of my Greek family members did that and its just very beautiful. And thats why it made me teary eyed in the sequel.
And the sequel did have more jokes... and it was more "laugh out loud" funny. A lot of the same jokes were in the sequel... but I think they worked well. And everything was explained more or less. It was just good. I love both movies and would highly recommend watching them.
I hope you guys liked my little Throwback Thursday! I think I'll be posting a few more of these soon... so keep a look out if you like them!
