Okay... so Friends Friday is kind of going to change to "Favorite Things Friday" I think cause I have some theories about more of my favorite things... and I need to talk about the character "The Bullet" in Hamilton.
So I'm not the first person that's noticed this- it's all around the internet. In Hamilton there is a character that is technically just an Ensemble character- a backround dancer that has a much more significant role in the play than just an Ensemble character. She symbolizes death and bad things happening throughout the play.
She is the first person to die in the actual play... well Alexander's Mother and his Cousin die in the very first song- but that's more of an explanation of the events that happen in Alexander's life before the play starts. She is killed for espionage after King George's First Song "You'll Be Back" in a brief musical moment that you can't hear on the soundtrack. After that she symbolizes death and political disaster. She's a bullet that just misses Hamilton in the song "Stay Alive." In "The Battle of Yorktown" she shakes John Lauren's hand after he kills a Red Coat. John Laurens is the next person to die. She delivers the message to King George that John Adams would be the next president of the United States- which is a symbol to the destruction of Hamilton's political career. She flirts with Phillip Hamilton and tells him where to find George Eacker- Phillip is literally flirting with death at that point. And she finally plays the bullet that Burr shoots to kill Alexander Hamilton at the end of the play.
I didn't see these moments mentioned in the articles online- but I'm also going to mention 2 other important roles that she played. In "What Did I Miss" when Jefferson says "Sally, be a lamb darling and won't you open it"- it's implied that she plays Sally Hemings- the slave that Jefferson was known to be having an affair with. She's also one of Aaron Burr's supporters that says "I can't believe we're here with him" right before Hamilton endorses Jefferson and Jefferson becomes the president. So I think in that instance she symbolized the destruction of Aaron Burr's political career.
I didn't really notice her when I saw the play. I did notice her dying of espionage and I believe I noticed the choreography for the bullet- but I didn't really notice anything until I watched it on Disney Plus and I kept seeing her in all of these moments- and then my sister told me about it and it made a lot of sense. There really was a lot of thought that goes into every little detail of this show and... it really makes something special because of it.
I hope you guys like this! I'm still probably going to talk about Friends for the most part on Fridays... but every once and a while I'll switch it up to one of my other favorite things.
Bye!
-Shannon
