Alrighttt so I just saw Finding Dory and I liked it... but I don't think I loved it the way I love most Pixar movies.
I loved the message that they were sending through the movie. Most of the characters had disabilities and they were stronger because of their disabilities and they were able to help each other out because of it. It was sweet and a great message to send to kids and adults. I'm happy they didn't change the characters at all either. Dory was the same, Marlin was the same. I'm super happy it wasn't a prequel... I thought that was kind of a miss when they did that with Monster's University. And all the new characters are funny and charming and well designed!
I love when Pixar gets inventive with their character designs too. When they did Monster's Inc they had to invent new technology just for the tiny detail of Sully's hair moving when he was asleep. And that was really cool! I feel like Pixar hasn't been doing that as much lately... but with this movie and with Inside Out they're doing a good job. The new technology was about how Hank was invented and how he was moving and his camouflage was hard to animate... and I don't know if it was really "New Technology was invented" but it was something along those lines... it took a while for them to do that and I think that's why it took so long for this movie to come out.
One thing that I thought was interesting that I think deterred the movie for me is that it was supposed to have more to do with sea animals being raised in captivity and that had to do with why Hank was so on edge... but after Blackfish came out Disney didn't want to use that storyline because it would look like they were trying to bash Seaworld and they aren't... so that was kind of scrapped... and I like that that idea was scrapped because I don't want too much politics in my cartoon... but I also feel like the plot felt a little rushed because of that. It wasn't really rushed... I mean they took their time with the movie... but it just seemed like there was something missing that didn't quite work.
And that was kind of my big complaint with it. For some reason... I didn't like the end that much either. It was a happy ending and I'm happy it ended that way... but it felt a little underwhelming compared to Finding Nemo. I think Finding Nemo is something a grown up could watch and love and this one I feel like is geared towards a very young audience... and I'm usually more of a fan of Pixar's movies that are somewhere in between... So... yeah. I watch Finding Nemo quite often. That is one of those movies I can sit down and watch whenever it is on... I don't think I'll watch this one over and over again. And there's nothing really wrong with that... but that is how I judge how much I like a movie and this just didn't quite hold up to that.
This is a good, fun summer movie and I really loved it, I loved the message behind it and I thought it was cute and well done... but it doesn't come close to the original... and that's kind of what I'm upset about a little bit.
