Scribbles About Movies: Holidays Review

This is something I saw on netflix that I thought was going to be really funny but also kind of scary. Its a horror anthology where each holiday had a different short horror movie about it. I was intrigued because I love a good horror comedy and I thought this would fall more under that genre... but it is basically 8 slasher movies. They were all definitely horror movies. Most had some funny elements... but any satire in there was definitely horror related. Since this is an anthology, I'll have little spoiler-free mini reviews on each movie.

Valentine's Day
This one I really liked. I didn't like it as much as the other ones after I started watching them. It was predictable... I knew exactly what was going to happen. I thought it was well written and directed though, there were a lot of good shots... it sort of seemed like a minimalist type of thing... so that was cool. I liked that a lot. The mean girl in the movie said something that I would think of as unforgivable... but you can see she genuinely didn't mean what she said, she was just being a dumb, mean kid and you feel bad for her... but she never apologized... so horror movie justice made sense here.

St. Patrick's Day
This one was weird. I kind of wish this was at another point in the movie because its this was very scary but it was a little lighter... and the next few movies are the darker stories of the movie. The shots were also not totally unlike the shots of the Valentine's Day short... but not as good. This was weird though. It sort of had a happy ending and there was a good scare at the end... but its weird. I think this was very good holiday-wised though. This relied heavily on the Holiday theme of it all... as did the next one.

Easter
I had to turn the movie off at this point... not gonna lie. This one... I wouldn't watch if you're easily offended. I feel like this one is the most shocking and uncomfortable. This I think is the shortest, at least the scary part isn't that short... I didn't time all of them... but there was a lot of weird symbolism and it was well done but also... terrifying. I like that this one was kept in the dark so that you couldn't really see the full thing. It was good.

Mother's Day
This one also had a lot of symbolism. There's a big "Jump Scare" at the end kind of like the Carrie hand coming out of the ground... actually nearly exactly like that. I didn't like that at the end. I thought the whole segment felt very uncomfortable enough for people to get the horror feel. It didn't need the scare at the end. This point was a little boring in the anthology... but it was still really good.

Father's Day
This one was kind of a tearjerker... and it was really well done because you really felt the emotions of the main character. She's listening to a tape from her father, who she believed was dead, and he's directing her to where she can find him and you can hear the main character as a child, and see all the images around there. There's a part where the main character passes a wire fence and you can hear the noise on the fence of a stick going across the fence and making that noise... and just things like that. Its really realistic feeling and you can really feel the feelings in this one. You can see and feel it... it was emotional... but then again, there was a scare at the end... that I didn't want. This didn't feel like it should be a horror movie to me... I'd rather they just fade to black instead of the scare that they did... but I guess because it was a horror anthology they had to include that... but I just didn't think it made it as great.

Halloween
This I think has the most well known director of the bunch: Kevin Smith! This is one of the funnier ones... and the end of these are all more of a funny satire. I think they're all kind of satires, but they use horror for the satire instead of comedy. This is funny though. Harley from Epic Meal Time and Harley Quinn Smith (the daughter of Kevin Smith) is in this as well. And in this one... the bad guy gets what's coming to him. And at the very end... the good guys aren't good either. It's funny. I liked this one.

Christmas
This one is great if you really like dark humor. I actually wrote a Black Friday short script for a class that had a similar theme to one of the themes in this. Seth Green is funny... it was funny and still scary and I liked the world of this one and the next one the best. This is probably my favorite of the bunch.

New Year's
This one was really clever. It was a good way to tie all the holidays together too, because they did that a bit at the beginning. I didn't see the twist coming and I thought that was pretty cool. I liked this one... probably my second favorite. It was creepy and well done.

So this was good... I would say if you're easily offended... maybe you shouldn't watch this... or horror movies in general to be honest... haha. There's a lot of dark humor... which I like. It isn't a comedy though. It does get a little boring in the middle... and none of these are like the scariest thing you'll ever see... it did keep me up at night though just because I get nightmares. I don't like watching horror movies or tv shows right before bed... so I stayed up till 3 because of that. I'd still recommend watching if you like horror movies.

Weekly Wrap Up 7.30.17

Sunday 7.23.17  Sunday was a really good day… it was kind of a lazy day for me… but my dad pretty much finished most of the painting in my room… he ran out of paint before he could totally finish it up… so he’ll finish that up soon… my mom is going to the paint store tomorrow… so hopefully he can finish it up then.  He also made some really fantastic barbecue pork… it was going to be pulled pork… but the pulling process didn’t really work… I kind of prefer the texture of it sliced instead of pulled…. idk. I like pulled pork… but this sliced pork was really delicious and flavorful and good.  We went for Starbucks and Ice Cream too… which was fun. Starbucks sends a lot of bonus stars offers after 2… so even though we go in the morning- we have to go after 2 because then we’ll get bonus stars, which my dad uses in New York because it’s a little more expensive there.  And then the ice cream… nutella ice cream with crushed oreos and marshmallow…it was del...

Rereading My Favorite Thing I Wrote In College

Hey guys! I'd say "today's post is a little different" but they're all kind of different to begin with... so this might end up being the same- or at least something that can fit into this blog in a nice way. So I don't want to post the actual thing that I wrote... but in my college Creative Writing Class that I took at 21 we needed to write a fantastical realism short story. And I wrote something that I always liked. The lead character was a smart and sassy woman... the fantastical elements were exciting and unique... and the story as a whole had a cute ending and a good message... and I really liked the way that I took what happened in my real life and changed it into this amazing and fantastical thing. Re-reading it... it was still pretty good. I actually liked the ending a little bit better because it had a nice message about believing in yourself that I kind of just snuck in there without much thought... and there was a cute little love story. I liked ...

Throwback Thursday: The Incredibles

This is one of the more underrated movies in the Pixar Universe... thatI think is actually getting more popular now than it was back when it was released... so that's good. I think it really stands the test of time... but it still isn't one of my favorites. This movie I think is pretty cool because it was the first time Pixar really used humans. When I was little I thought "Toys, Bugs, Monsters, Fish... the next movie will be about dogs!" And I was surprised it was this! I didn't know Pixar could do that! But I guess technically its about heroes and not humans... but then Pixar began to show more humans in their world and The Pixar Theory was started... and yeah. I just kind of want to state my opinion on the Pixar Theory here too cause why not: I don't believe that Pixar set out to create this elaborate world with all the movies connected... but I do still believe it exists in some way shape of form. It all adds up and checks out... so for me... somehow t...
