So this is a new thing called Flashback Friday which is basically Throwback Thursday on a Friday. I think I'll continue to do Throwback Thursdays, but I really wanted to post something about Joan Rivers yesterday, so I thought that was a little more important to post.
When I saw that The 90s are All That were airing the Parent's Day episode of Hey Arnold. This is really one of those iconic moments in cartoon history, at least throughout my childhood. It's one of those cartoons that you watch as a kid and it makes you sad. It makes you feel more things than the run-of-the mill cartoon. And the creators of the show totally didn't have to include this info about Arnold. We knew Arnold lived with his grandparents and we could just accept that... but they decided to go a step further and give Arnold adventurer parents that could in fact still be alive.
I was a little surprised at how mean Helga was in this episode actually. She is always mean to Arnold, but she would usually understand if he was really upset by something and try to actually cheer him up and make sure he's okay. Its understandable that she is so mean to him though because she totally doesn't know what exactly Arnold is going through at all. I mean her parents are neglectful, but still at 9 its not easy for someone with parents to understand what its like for someone to not have parents.
I loved that Arnold is hearing the stories about his parents adventures and he loves them and he's asking to hear them, but he knows Grandpa exaggerates his stories, so these may not be true at all. In this episode he wants to hear the truth about where his parents are and why they went there. Grandpa is very honest with him and gives him the truth, and he even tells Arnold that he doesn't think his parents are alive. And even though its sad and scary, Arnold still loves them for it. He loves that his parents left to help kids that really need it. He also is so hopeful that they're still alive because Arnold is such an optimist that he can't help but think that!
And then Arnold has the dream about him when he was little and it reminds him of how his grandparents were always there for him. And Arnold realizes that his grandparents are just as good as parents for him. Sure they're older than everyone else's parents, but they have always been there for him when he was a little kid and he was scared and he needed them.
And I think its great that in the end Big Bob didn't win and neither did Arnold and his family. Arnold's family beat Big Bob on the last challenge but only because Helga told Grandpa to go for his ankles. Also Grandpa knows that Helga likes Arnold and that she will be his Poukey someday. He listens to her and beats Big Bob, but THEY STILL DON'T WIN! Phoebe's parents beat them both! It shows that it really doesn't matter in the long run!
Another random thing I loved, the interactions between Mr. Simmons and Big Bob. They're just such opposites and Mr. Simmons is afraid of Big Bob and Big Bob thinks Simmons is a quack. It's just sooo great to see the opposites together.
I just really liked all of the little details in this episode and I think its just a really heart filled episode that is a cartoon classic in my opinion. And we get to see Arnold grow up a little bit, but still have fun with his parents like a kid. It's just all very meaningful and good.
