So I mentioned Toy Story 3 being one of my favorite movies of all time... and I'm not sure it's better than the first movie... and I'm not sure the second movie isn't better than the first either... so yeah. I guess I'm just going to dive into all of these movies and we'll go over what's the best and why each of them are amazing on their own anyway!
And I do love all of these movies individually... but they definitely do all play better as a trilogy than individual movies. If Pixar decided not to make another Toy Story movie after the first one... I don't think the story would be told. And although I was 18 when Toy Story 3 came out... I feel like that was the perfect completion to the story. And I know they're making or trying to make a Toy Story 4... I have a feeling there's still more story to tell and I'm excited for it. I know most people are skeptical because Toy Story 3 was amazing... but I'm trying to keep an open mind about Toy Story 4... if it's even happening still- which I guess it is.
Anyway back to this... for some reason as MANY times as I've watched this- I hadn't really picked up on just how many horror elements and references there are in the movie. I've always noticed in Sid's house and with Sid's toys... but you can kind of even see it with Buzz replacing Woody... there's just a lot of horror to it... it was pretty cool. Nothing really scary- but if you watch it as an adult that has seen a few horror movies- you'll get it and it just kind of adds to the story and makes it funnier.
One scene that I found particularly funny was when Buzz and Woody were in the Pizza Planet truck... and Buzz just buckles himself in... like if the Pizza Planet guy looked in the back- he'd see a toy just buckled in. And it was especially funny because then Woody was in the back and he got thrown all around because he didn't listen to Buzz.
That was the other thing I loved this time around... all the differences between the toys and the people are just really funny. Buzz and Woody, Slinky and Potato Head, Sid and Andy... there was just a lot that I kind of tried to focus on this time around. Obviously I had always noticed these differences- but I remember that they described the differences between Andy's Room and Sid's room are their most valuable notes... and I tried to kind of pay closer attention to that... and then I just noticed all of the other foils with the characters. I just thought that was cool. I really need to look at the differences because... I mean I think this movie is the perfect example of Foils and anyone writing anything looking for foils or rivals should definitely look to this movie as an example.
Just a side note... I kind of love how Sid and Andy never meet even though they lived right next door to each other during most of the movies. That was a nice little detail too. I just like it.
So... as someone interested in writing and making films... I think this viewing of Toy Story was kind of inspirational and helpful... it's definitely not something I'd particularly think of while trying to tell a story... but there are tons of layers and it's just so perfect... that I'll probably end up watching this movie even more often than I already do. One of my favorite movies ever.
