I was really excited for this show. The concept just seemed really unique to me and I was hoping they would be able to capture it in a really good way that was funny and heartfelt and I wanted the 3 storylines to be different- but to still connect nicely... and this was really perfect for that.
So this show goes through the life of Alex Riley at 3 crucial points in his life. The Past, which shows Alex as a kid at a new school that is very nervous to start out. He invents things and he's a huge basketball fan... but for the Bulls, and he moved to California with his new Stepdad and Step Brother- who were both lakers fans... so he's nervous and he just wants to fit in.
The Present shows 40 year old Alex who just found his wife cheating on him... gets a divorce and split custody of his daughter. He lives in someone's garage and his ex is planning on getting married and moving far away with their daughter. Alex wants to prove to his ex that he can do something to keep his daughter in the area... I didn't totally get how this part worked out... but he is inventing something and pitching it with his best friend- played by Jaleel White aka Steve Urkel. So that's what's worrying him.
And in the future Alex is played by John Laraquette who has something big happen to his company- I guess... and he has a heart attack and then retires.
So these are all very different stories... but there are a lot of themes that come up in all 3. Some of the same characters and jokes are mentioned... very subtly. You can definitely see how each life event leads Alex to where he is today and they're all really important to him... it's nice to see and the subtle jokes make it really fun to watch.
I love it when shows take place in the past or in the future... and I love how this combines both. I think the opening says that it starts in 1991 and I love 90s shows... but this isn't overly 90s... which is nice. Right now I can name 4 comedies that take place in the past (The Goldbergs, Young Sheldon, Fresh Off The Boat and Girlboss) this isn't like any of those shows... and the future scene reminds me of the "Future" part of Parks and Recreation... which I loved. I feel like there's always a missed opportunity when a show takes place in the future and they don't show any futuristic developments (come on Desperate Housewives, you could have done better!). It had everything I was looking for it to have and I think they managed to do it in a way that was even better than I expected... so I'm super impressed. I think this is a must watch this year... I will definitely keep watching it- even if it ends up on a different night than what it is now... it's just a really nice show. Is it as funny as Life in Pieces... no but it's still really great!
I hope you guys check this one out!
