So before I get into the review of the best movie ever made... let me just tell the story of it. On April 1st, 2015 it was announced that Will Ferrell and Kristin Wiig made a lifetime movie together. And it was kind of like "what? Is this real? Is this April Fool's? What is this?" And the next day it was said that Ferrell was upset that it was being released and the project was scrapped. Which made no sense A) Lifetime has control over the movie, not Will Ferrell B) Even if its low budget, its unlikely that they completed something that wouldn't be released. Especially with such high profile celebrities. So either this didn't exist, or we would be seeing it soon. And last month there were some posters spotted for it, a trailer was released and everyone was excited... but still confused. It looked quite dramatic from the previews... but it has to be a comedy right? What kind of lifetime movie is this.
It's just that. This is 100% a comedy... but its also a lifetime movie. The writers just sort of threw in ridiculous lifetime tales together and made an actual movie thats suspenseful and also a complete joke. It involved all of Lifetime's go to movie tropes. Adoption, a girl with diabetes, a dad thats an alcoholic, people living in a ginormous house when they have ridiculous jobs that would never pay for that house, a forgettable gay best friend that gets mentioned numerous times, A Gluten Free Food Stand, shootings, the woman is crazy, faked pregnancy and a dancing segment at the end.
So while watching this... I was a little confused. It obviously wasn't serious... but at the same time it was believable as a drama and there was suspense. My friend and I were watching this on tivo and I started it a little late... and once we were caught up with the tivo it was horrible not being able to fast forward through commercials. It was pretty intense.
And the story... when I explain this it will be clear its a comedy lol. It starts off with Robert (Will Ferrell), Sarah (Kristin Wiig) and their baby daughter Sulley all having a nice day at the docks. Sarah was pregnant at the time and she wanted to go out on the boat... but Robert pointed out that the docks were rotten and he needed to get them fixed. Sarah falls down into the water and loses the baby.
Flash Forward 5 years later. Sulley is now 6, she has diabetes. Robert is a recovering alcoholic that is 6 months sober and Sarah is running an Organic Gluten Free fruit stand and bakery with her best friend Charlie. They're life is going pretty okay, but Robert is still very overprotective of Sulley. When Sarah gets her a bike with training wheels, he freaks out saying it isn't good for her diabetes and that she needs to keep the training wheels on. Sarah is annoyed by this and the way to fix this? Adopting a baby!
So they meet Bridgette, who seems really nice, but she's homeless so they offer her to live with them!
She moves in with them, she's clearly obsessed with Robert, we find out she was one of Robert's groupies from his book touring days... quick backstory, Robert writes financial advisory books... so naturally he has lots of groupies. They slept together, she is faking the pregnancy and kidnaps Sully... a bunch of stuff happens. Its all equally suspenseful and funny and ridiculous. The acting was all really great for a lifetime movie. Will Ferrell and Kristin Wiig are both very good... and the actress playing Bridgette was pretty fantastic as well. Robert has to save Sully and keep the family together. He's scared she's going to die of diabetes because she doesn't have her medicine. Its pretty fantastic.
So the first time I watched it, it was a drama. I knew Ferrell and Adam McKay were producers, so it was a comedy... but I was just watching it as a Lifetime movie and it was good. I overlooked a lot of the lines and jokes that really were great satire and... it was good.
The second time I watched this, it was a full blown comedy and I was noticing funnier things about it. Some things that I had noticed the first time around... but some were even funnier the second time. The emphasis on Charlie is probably my favorite part because that is spot on. Any lifetime or Hallmark movie has some sort of throwaway character that you don't remember but they keep bringing up. You have no idea how many times the phrase "who's Charlie" was said by Cristina and I. And thats something that always happens and something you could tell the writers were focusing on and I thought that was really funny. There was also someone killed that they never explained why and nothing more happened at the end of the movie... It was all just really well done cause these are things that actually happen in lifetime movies... but it was a lot different in this. It was funny.
So overall... clearly I liked this. I feel like its a super brilliant and very meta comedy... which is quite a thing right now. Entertainment weekly even made a list of the most meta moments in pop culture last year... including The Lego Movie, 22 Jump Street, The Grumpy Cat movie, The play Its only a Play... and i hope this keeps happening cause I like knowing the meta comedies of the year. I thought that was funny and pretty cool.
