So I don't know Prince songs all that well... but I am a fan and I thought I'd talk about some of his songs and why he has a big influence in my life.
There aren't any Prince songs I know all the words to or anything... there are some songs that I didn't know he sang until today... which is what made me a fan of David Bowie, so that's cool. He's influenced a ton of musicians today though.
For one: Ke$ha. She is also from Minnesota and she actually got her start by breaking into his house and dropping off her EP. Luckily, she's a talented singer, and Prince was a religious man (probably at the time) so it was probably easy for him to forgive her and give her a chance. That's important to me because really I do like Kesha's music. I'm happy that it looks like her career is back on track because I missed her music... and believe it or not I can do a SPOT ON Kesha impression.
Also I LOVE Fall Out Boy. They were all I talked about pretty much from age 13-18 pretty much... so all of my teen years were Fall Out Boy. And I'm still a massive fan. Patrick Stump, the lead singer of Fall Out Boy LOVES prince... so oddly enough, Prince inspired Fall Out Boy and there probably wouldn't be the same Fall Out Boy without the same Prince.
And in a lot of modern pop songs. I'm listening to Cake By The Ocean by DNCE right now... probably my favorite song of the moment... and its a little princey.
But no one can do a straight up Prince song. I'm not a big fan of the high pitched voices... but I think Prince is actually really good. Like I can listen to a lot of Prince songs in a row and not get annoyed... but most high pitched songs, I just kinda listen to one and then leave the rest of them alone... but yeah. Its good.
So for specific songs... I never knew Little Red Corvette was his song! That's a great song. And I like 1999, My friend played some of his songs on periscope and Seven was really interesting. Apparently its about The Book of Revelation or something? Really odd, but cool. He's definitely different and his songs are really meaningful.
And he wrote a really great song after the Baltimore riots. I forget what exactly it said or what it was called... and no one really talked about it much... but I remember that kind of being what I thought we all needed to hear. It was very well said and a well-written song. And that's one of his later songs I think... the last song I ever knew of him and it was so great and so meaningful. I'm going to look that up now and link it somewhere around here...
And everyone at the SNL 40th celebration sounded most excited to meet him... and there were so many great people there! I think him and Paul McCartney were the two people Jimmy Fallon seemed to talk about more.
Here is the song Baltimore by Prince. I think its a very important song for the world right now and a very moving video as well. Everything I heard about on the news was negative and all about the riots and how terrible people were because of it... but this shows more peaceful protests. I think its fair to show both sides... and I hadn't seen much of the peaceful side... so yeah.
Last but not least... there is no one else like Prince. Patrick Stump is probably my favorite singer... and when he did a solo album and did some prince-esque songs it didn't work. I like Glee and I think Matthew Morrison is a great singer... but when he did Prince... no. It was bad. There is only one of him, ya know. And he's a legend.
So yeah... listen to some Prince. Chill out for a little bit. And remember him and all he's meant to the Music Industry. He may not have been someone I know that much about or that I listened to all that often... but I listen to Fall Out Boy all the time... so if he's influenced them, he's influenced me... you know?
