This Week in Sexism: Rebel Wilson and Maggie Gyllenhall's Age + The Bachelorette

So... I was going to do a Scribbles About News, and then I was going to do a feminist rant... but because all the news is so sexist... I thought lets combine them! And here is my 80 cents on the topics at hand...

I'm going to start out with Rebel Wilson because thats kind of a big thing for the week. So Rebel Wilson has been under fire this week saying that she really is not 26 and her name is not Rebel Wilson at all. Is this a big deal? I don't really care if Rebel Wilson is 26, 35, or 100... she's still funny as hell and can actually sing. She responded to this on twitter saying that she is really a 100 year old Merman and that her real name is Fat Patricia. She's super funny for a 35 year old! Lol.

Of corse women can be funny at any age ever. And it shouldn't matter what her age is... it should be focused on her talent, not age, looks, weight or anything of the like. Rebel Wilson is beautiful and even if she looks 35, she still looks 26 to me. She looks like she could play a college student. Heck I think Mindy Kaling would be a believable high school student too, and she is actually 35!

I think most people at this point think... its stupid to focus this much on age right? Wrong. Because the newest story of the day is that Maggie Gyllenhall who is 37 years old was turned down from a role for being "too old" to play a 55 year-olds girlfriend... And... that is terrible. You can read the article here. Maggie expresses her anger and frustrations with Hollywood as a whole. This really upsets me too because... like really Maggie Gyllenhall is too old? She's gorgeous, she does look 37... and yeah she would probably look too old to play a college student or something like what I just said with Rebel Wilson could believably play a college student still (That was a run on sentence and a bad one... but I'm mad.) She can however, believably play a love interest of a 55 year old man... well actually I'd say she looks a little too young to play the love interest of a 55 year old man... but I could see her playing the part or someone like her. I wouldn't think her notes would be that she is too old.

And here is the thing... wouldn't happen to a man. It would probably be the oppoiste. Lets say this movie starred Julianne Moore as the 55 Year Old. She's 54 years old in real life... thats believable... lets take an actor the same age as Maggie... do you think they would have James Franco, a 37 year old male play her love interest? No. Probably not, they would probably say he's too young. That it would have to highlight the age gap between the two of them to be a believable love story and then it would just be about Julianne Moore being a cougar... but this movie Gyllenhall was in... probably does not focus around that "he's so much older than her" dynamic. Gyllenhall seemed shocked and confused after being turned down for the role, and she probably wouldn't have been if the script focused on her being much younger than the Male lead. It is incredibly sexist, there is definitely a double standard. And its terrible. It needs to change.

And then there is the completely terrible thing of this week... the new season of The Bachelorette. As someone that wants to be involved in television... it actually it actually embarrasses me that this show exists... and particularly this season.

I'm gonna cover my ass a little bit here... because I do want to work in TV and I do actually like this particular network... so I better just let that be known... you can skip the next paragraph if you want to just get to the feminism parts... but I do actually believe what I'm about to say, and I just want to express that. I don't want anyone to think I'm against this at all cause I'm not!

Before I say much more, I want to say I love ABC as a network. I think right now they have some of the most original shows on TV and that they really do kind of push the boundaries. I thought Cam and Mitch's wedding last year on Modern Family was inspiring and certainly historic. They have a lot of great shows that you can watch with your family. Blackish and Fresh Off The Boat are incredibly innovative and show races that often get overlooked in the family comedy drama. They have so many strong female characters. American Crime was really good for representing different races. Secrets and Lies is the best. I'm incredibly excited for The Muppets. I love The Goldbergs... and Once Upon A Time reminds me of classic  Disney, but for Grown Ups... its all great. Scandal, Grey's, How To Get Away With Murder... some of my favorite favorite shows. So that is that little cover... lol. And I mean all of it genuinely! Its very sincere that I support the network. (I mean I'm watching their news right now!)

Okay back to the rant. Sorry this is so long... lol. This season of The Bachelorette there is a twist because there are two bachelorettes... but that isn't the only twist... they are competing to be the bachelorette... by having the men vote for their favorite one. Wait... what?

So... yeah. I don't know what the bachelorettes names are... so I'm just going to make them up. I'm pretty sure the one that left was named Brit but I'm going to call her Felicia. And I was going to call the current one Brit because I know one of them is Brit but in order to make this less confusing I will call her Mildred. Lol.

So all the men were like "Ohhh Mildred just has what it takes to be the Bachelorette. I don't think Felicia has what it takes." And then "Really? Cause I'm totally voting for Felicia. I want that booty!" "Yeah, I mean if its Felicia I'd still tap it, but I'm voting for Mildred cause I'd rather tap that." How Romantic.

So then Chris Harrison... I think thats his name... yeah. Poor Man's Ryan Seacrest lol. So he went up to Felicia and just went "Bye Felicia" and then she was like "wahhhhhhhhhh! why can't I get love. Wahhhhhhh. No one likes me." And they called her a Wahhhhhh-mbulence and she left.

I'm paraphrasing this a lot... if you didn't get that... you might want to learn a little about sarcasm... but yeah. Thats basically what happen. I did hear someone say that the woman didn't "have what it takes" to be the bachelorette.Which sucks.

So... there is that. But A) They would NEVER do this to a the bachelor. They would just let him have all the women's affections. If he wanted to pick all 25 of the women, he probably could! They do everything to make the Bachelor contestants overly famous. B) Its kind of crappy for Mildred. Now that she is The Bachelorette, she has to deal with picking the guys that actually wanted her there. C) Not fair for the men... they may be stuck with a bachelorette they didn't want. D) How must it feel to be Felicia? Thinking she gets this second chance for love and then they vote her off! She doesn't even get a slight chance! She just gets voted off right away. Not just voted off, but she has to feel like "wow Chris Soules didn't want me. These guys don't want me. Why does no one want me?" That would really really upset me. I would feel kind of terrible about that if it happened to me.

So... yeah. I think the producers of The Bachelorette or whoever approved this awful gimmicky concept that isn't even that exciting and isn't fair to any of the contestants should be ashamed of themselves.

These are just a few of MANY things wrong with society right now... it is really bad. It'll fix it now that we have a female ghostbusters right? No. What about a woman president? No. Nothing will fix this... and thats just how it is. We can either accept the way this is... or do something about it. I hope to do something about it.

Byeee!

Weekly Wrap Up 7.30.17

Sunday 7.23.17  Sunday was a really good day… it was kind of a lazy day for me… but my dad pretty much finished most of the painting in my room… he ran out of paint before he could totally finish it up… so he’ll finish that up soon… my mom is going to the paint store tomorrow… so hopefully he can finish it up then.  He also made some really fantastic barbecue pork… it was going to be pulled pork… but the pulling process didn’t really work… I kind of prefer the texture of it sliced instead of pulled…. idk. I like pulled pork… but this sliced pork was really delicious and flavorful and good.  We went for Starbucks and Ice Cream too… which was fun. Starbucks sends a lot of bonus stars offers after 2… so even though we go in the morning- we have to go after 2 because then we’ll get bonus stars, which my dad uses in New York because it’s a little more expensive there.  And then the ice cream… nutella ice cream with crushed oreos and marshmallow…it was del...

Throwback Thursday: The Incredibles

This is one of the more underrated movies in the Pixar Universe... thatI think is actually getting more popular now than it was back when it was released... so that's good. I think it really stands the test of time... but it still isn't one of my favorites. This movie I think is pretty cool because it was the first time Pixar really used humans. When I was little I thought "Toys, Bugs, Monsters, Fish... the next movie will be about dogs!" And I was surprised it was this! I didn't know Pixar could do that! But I guess technically its about heroes and not humans... but then Pixar began to show more humans in their world and The Pixar Theory was started... and yeah. I just kind of want to state my opinion on the Pixar Theory here too cause why not: I don't believe that Pixar set out to create this elaborate world with all the movies connected... but I do still believe it exists in some way shape of form. It all adds up and checks out... so for me... somehow t...

Rereading My Favorite Thing I Wrote In College

Hey guys! I'd say "today's post is a little different" but they're all kind of different to begin with... so this might end up being the same- or at least something that can fit into this blog in a nice way. So I don't want to post the actual thing that I wrote... but in my college Creative Writing Class that I took at 21 we needed to write a fantastical realism short story. And I wrote something that I always liked. The lead character was a smart and sassy woman... the fantastical elements were exciting and unique... and the story as a whole had a cute ending and a good message... and I really liked the way that I took what happened in my real life and changed it into this amazing and fantastical thing. Re-reading it... it was still pretty good. I actually liked the ending a little bit better because it had a nice message about believing in yourself that I kind of just snuck in there without much thought... and there was a cute little love story. I liked ...
