So I remember watching CBS This Morning years ago and at the time the three anchors were Gayle King, Nora O'Donnell (Both Brilliant journalists) and Charlie Rose (nah). Around the beginning of the Me Too Movement Charlie Rose was fired for sexual misconduct and soon after The Today Show anchor Matt Lauer was also fired. I believe Steve Carell's character Mitch Kessler more resembles the situation with Matt Lauer... but I did wonder what went on behind the scenes with both of those shows... and this gives a fictionalized look at what might have happened.
One of the funny things about this show is that Steve Carell is one of the men when the Me Too movement started that I was like "he would never be accused of this." And I still believe that, but he does SUCH a great job of playing a creep! Steve Carell actually plays 2 of my favorite characters of all time-Michael Scott and Gru- and it's hard to imagine that it's him playing all 3 of these roles. It's just really funny.
So while that's one thing the show focuses on and brings light to, it also shows who replaces Mitch, a smaller on the field reporter named Bradley Jackson (Witherspoon). How the network is trying to push out Alex Levy (Aniston) as well as others... and everyone in the show is trying to climb on top and keep their job safe while it might hurt other people... it's just a good show overall showing how competitive and difficult the news industry is.
The characters in this show are very layered and well written too. Even if they aren't likable like Mitch Kessler and at times Alex Levy... you see a lot of characters grow and change and you get to know a lot of who these characters are and what kind of motivates them. And all of the actors are just perfect in their parts. Especially Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon... but Mark Duplass and Billy Crudup were great as well... and I loved Hannah, Mia, Clare and Yanko as well... I thought even though they were smaller characters in the whole show- whenever they were on the screen they were fantastic.
I also used to like watching The Morning News and I don't so much right now because all the news is terrible and I just can't handle it... but this kind of made me want to eventually start watching it again. It was fun to watch and I kind of really wish more reporters were like Bradley Jackson.
This show also ended really well and it was really surprising. Throughout the show you can't really tell who's good and who's bad and at the end of the show... not everyone you thought was bad is bad... at least in this season. They probably could change any time but... it was kind of a relief to see that not everyone was bad in the end.
I can't wait for a season 2. I hope they filmed it already and maybe they'll drop it early because everyone is stuck at home. I doubt that- but wouldn't that be really cool?
I didn't really bingewatch this show because it is more serious... I could only really watch at the most 3 at a time and that was kind of rare and hard to do. It is also a longer show so- that also made it hard.
I hope you guys like this review- let me know what other shows I should watch! I will probably end up watching A LOT!
Bye!
