So I was thinking about something in the shower... as you do... and... I realized that there are 2 directors that I really love... and I feel like they're kind of polarizing... where some people love them, some people hate them... and they're often Critically acclaimed but never really award winning. And I feel like when I say I like these two directors people are like "Well, of corse you do!" And I don't think they're pretentious per se... but my mom would think the movies are weird... so that's how I'm defining "Pretentious" in this instance... so I hope these directors aren't thinking that I'm calling them pretentious... I also don't think that's a bad thing... but anyway I love them and here they are!
1) Baz Luhrmann- Luhrmann is known for the movies Moulin Rouge!, 1996's Romeo+ Juliet, and The Great Gatsby. I've never seen the movie Australia- but he also directed that. I think he has a very interesting style. My sister complained of Moulin Rouge having a fast pace... and a lot of Luhrman's movies do... but they also kind of have repetitive lines and themes that pop in throughout the film. In Moulin Rouge I remember the quote Ewan McGregor's character Christian repeats about love in the movie over and over... and the shot with the Absinthe I believe is both fast and repetitive. It's just very interesting. He's also known for blending these sort of "Period Pieces" with a modern soundtrack or with modern day visuals... Romeo+ Juliet I would say is the most noteworthy of this because they are repeating the same script of the play Romeo and Juliet... but it takes place in modern day California... and it's just very beautiful.
I think there is also a commentary on the themes of the subject matters of these movies as well as the themes of the soundtracks being timeless. Plus the costumes and sets are elaborate and beautiful. The acting is always amazing... and overall I just like them.
I was thinking of Luhrmann when I came up with this idea because I imagined a Luhrmann version of The Scarlett Letter... which I think would be interesting.
2) Wes Anderson- Wes Anderson has directed a ton of movies... and it seems like he has a new one every few years at this point. I've only seen The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, and The Royal Tennenbaums... there are a lot I haven't seen. I want to see Isle of Dogs... that sounds like such an interesting and creative way to tell a story... I'm a dog lover myself and I think it's great to show the relationship between humans and dogs... and to also include influences from Japanese films- and specifically Kurosawa... I think he has great vision... watching the movies in theaters is very visually stunning... these aren't always the most fun movies to go out and see... but I always like them and I think the look of all of them are amazing... he really uses colors to tell a story and I think that he does such a great job of it. I think the scenery and the characters tell more of a story than the actual plot of the movie does. Again... he has great actors in all of his movies... and I've just really loved all of them. I don't recommend these much because I feel like a lot of people I know either love or hate his movies... but they're worth checking out. I feel like Isle of Dogs will be one people might have a stronger connection to... but I can't tell for sure. He's just a really creative person and I'm a big fan!
So that is everything. Btw: Two-sday is something I'm doing on my Scribbles About Beauty Blog... and I thought this would be good to bring here too.
