Scribbles About TV: Shannon Watches old Tv Shows; The X Files Season 2 pt 1

Little Green Men
This one is a good episode. To be honest... I felt a little underwhelmed after the season finale... but that doesn't make this a bad episode. Its still really good. I like the way that they separated Mulder and Scully but they still talk to each other like they're working together. It kind of set the tone for everything that happened this season. There was a lot of 90s stuff you can't get away with in todays PC culture, Mulder makes fun of a hispanic guy a little bit... which I'm not saying this is a good thing or a bad thing... obviously you shouldn't make fun of someone because of their language, they also sort of portray him as dumb which is something problematic that used to happen that wouldn't happen today. I always think thats interesting. I talked about that with Roland and its just a weird thing that never happens anymore. I don't know.

The Host
This one I remember as one of my favorites. It still scared me watching it now. This episode is super interesting because its a monster of the week, and a crazy one at that... but there is a lot more to it. There's a lot of the myth arc stuff thats involved. We hear from Mr. X in this episode. We know that they need to re-instate the X Files, which had been shut down at the time and we know that they're trying to get Mulder to not work on this case. I think this is Skinner's 2nd appearance and its so good. You get that he doesn't really believe Mulder and I don't think he likes working with him... but he still wants the X Files to be reinstated. He hates the Cigarette Smoking Man and tells him to get out of his office in this episode... and there are just a ton of great moments like that. And its really really scary. The Monster is just a guy in a suit... but its so scary and its such a Monster that we haven't seen on the show yet. This is the episode I think of and I picture this particular monster when I think of the show. Its just so scary and such a great episode. Probably one of my Top 10. Really good.

Blood
This was another good one. Another Monster of The Week... but still we get that these are a little bit more than that. Its a creepy concept that I remembered and I forgot the name of the episode but I remember there are electronic devices telling these people to kill other people because of a chemical in the air... so again they're really driving into the fact that The Government does some really messed up stuff. In The Host they say the monster is man-made and they show people that were affected by Chernobyl. The Lone Gunmen are in this episode which is always great. And we also see Mulder affected by this kill em thing that is scary to see. It even effects Mulder.

Sleepless
This one I was a little bored by the actual storyline... which wasn't bad. The bad guy was someone in Vietnam that they had drugged and it resulted in him and a lot of soldiers not being able to sleep in 24 years. And the bad guy is kind of like a Freddy Krueger. He goes into what would be their dreams and kills his victims with what would be their biggest fears. When Scully does the examination, they say that it was like the one man believed he was on fire and thats how he died, but he wasn't on fire. It was a weird concept, but it was interesting. This was the first episode where we get to see Mr. X and its also the first episode for Alex Krycheck, who becomes important. He kind of plays to Mulder's ego and says he's a fan of his work, he doesn't think Mulder is Spooky... but he's working with the Cigarette Smoking Man. And he kills the villain of the episode at the end when he didn't really have to. Mulder was talking him out of shooting and he was going to get him help, but Krycheck just comes in and shoots him... and its bad.

Theres also a moment with Mulder and Scully on the phone where Scully says "ohhh it must be nice working with someone who believes you" and Mulder is like "yeah I don't know how I put up with you" but still in a way like "this isn't right this is too easy" type of thing... so yeah.

Duane Barry
I always really liked this episode. And its still one of the best. Duane Barry is such an interesting character... and this time watching it I thought he was even more interesting. A gun hit him in the head so he doesn't have any sort of sense of right or wrong, he also used to work for the FBI and is telling all these unbelievable stories in a way that you believe them or that you know he believes them. Its an interesting combination and a dangerous one at that, which is proven at the end of the episode when he kidnaps Scully. Plus like you trust this guy and you feel bad, but then you don't know whether he's lying or telling the truth or who he's going to hurt. Then at the end of the episode with Scully its just so maddening. I remember being angry at him for kidnapping Scully and I still was! I wanted Scully to kick his ass or something, but she knew he had a gun and that he'd definitely kill her so she couldn't do that.

Its also funny how he refers to the bald guy that he shoots as baldy. Its just kind of a weird asshole remark and it makes you not like this guy... but ultimately I still feel sympathetic. Very great actor to pull this character off.

Ascension
I don't think I used to like this as much as Duane Barry, but I kind of like it just as much. Its still really suspenseful and at the end of the episode there is a sense of victory because the x files was re-instated, but overall sadness because Scully was captured and you don't really know whats going to happen to her. I could imagine watching this at the time and being really excited and scared not knowing exactly if and when Scully is coming back... especially after seeing the next episode.

I always remembered liking this episode, but I didn't understand it... now it is definitely one of the worst episodes. It makes no sense and it really should have but its so confusing. I think I thought this was kind of hot when I was younger and seeing all these nightclubs it just looked exciting... but now I notice nothing really makes sense or connects. I remembered the image of the plane always confused me because I thought that was supposed to be an important part of the episode and the fire thing never connected with the overall plot of the episode. The thing with her being able to kill them even though she wasn't a vampire and drinking her own blood to make her a vampire because she was "drinking the blood of a believer" but she didn't take a life so it didn't work... none of it made sense. It seemed kind of like a cop out.

Also Mulder makes a phone call and uses the pseudonym Marty Mulder... why use a different first name? Lol. This episode was just sooooo bad! I really thought this was one of my favorites too... but its so bad. Lol.

One Breath
This episode is better than I remembered it. I loved Scully's mom and sister. I'm trying hard not to mention the podcast X Files Files too much... but in it Paul Scheer imagined a night where Mulder goes to dinner with Scully's mom just to get to know her better and know more about her. And it did feel that way. They have an instant connection and it just worked. And it made you feel even sadder for Scully being in this coma. And apparently this is accurate as to what happens in comas. Kumail talked about that a little bit on the podcast and I thought that was interesting. Like when she mentions Nurse Owens and that there is no Nurse Owens. Its interesting.

Firewalker
After everything that just happened... this episode was kind of a let down... but it wasn't bad. It was like Ice but a little more boring, but there were a lot of great performances in this by people that were pretty famous or that are famous now. Bradley Whitford from Trophy Wife was in this, a girl that was on Becker that I think played a waitress at the coffee house was in this, she was excellent. I felt so bad when her character died. The other people looked really familiar but I can't exactly place them... all good. It was just a bit of a slower story. The deaths in these were pretty amazing though, there was like a spore monster disease thing that came out of peoples throats... It reminded me of Alien (or Spaceballs) but it comes up from the throat. Pretty cool. I wasn't paying attention 100% with this episode... but its worth kind of half watching even though it isn't the most exciting. They really liked their disease types of episodes the first couple of seasons and I think they're all really strong and if you like science, they'll interest you... but I think this might be the most boring of the bunch. 3 was definitely worse... but that one is still easy for me to watch and follow where I just kind of found this boring... which happens a lot in these episodes. (I think the one season I didn't think there were any boring episodes was season 6.)

I also started taking some notes in this episode and I noted that Bradley Whitford I believe looks wayyy better now than he did when he was young. I think he's a really attractive man, but I really like the way he looks now that he's older. I really liked Trophy Wife and I think he's a very charming actor and this was a rather creepy role for him. I liked it.

I also noted that Scully had an interesting line after Mulder told her that maybe she shouldn't work on this case she said she still wanted to do it and he said she should take some time and she responded with "I've lost enough time." I like the use of the phrase "lost time" instead of "wasted time" because she was abducted by aliens and throughout the series they mention losing time as a sign of alien abduction. I think what I've always believed about Scully, and now believe even more after re-watching Beyond The Sea, is that deep down, she really does believe. She hasn't seen everything Mulder has seen and she questions most of what she does believe... but deep down she really believes I think. Its incredibly hard to deny that these weird paranormal things happen when its your job to investigate them... but its also weird to see these things and then believe in them, turning everything you've ever known or believed completely upside down. Scully believes a lot in science and religion, sometimes in X Files there is no scientific evidence to back things up because there is no scientific explanation. And a lot of Mulder's theories go against what the church believes and what the church says... so it isn't really straightforward. I feel like this kind of backs up that belief of mine that Scully doesn't just want to believe, she's denying the belief  that she knows is true.

Red Museum

This is the type of X Files episode that I was really excited to see. I kind of love when they investigate weird cult like stuff... and in the end the cult wasn't even the main thing. I have to admit I don't totally understand the entire episode... but I liked all the twists, there were soooo many in this episode it was really difficult to follow. I had to rewind a lot because... it was difficult to watch and it got boring at times... but I really do appreciate these episodes (I can't wait to get to the one in season 3 with the 2 high school girls... I think its called Syngzy or something... that one is great.). I liked that it combined the myth arc with the monster of the week... it was a little all over the place with this... but I thought there was a good payoff at the end. I also don't think this is ever mentioned again... and it is a pretty big episode. Deep Throat's killer gets killed... which is crazy.

My notes on this one:

Great Cold Open... How freaking exciting was that??? It starts off as a typical boring family and then the boy just walks into the woods and goes missing for 4 hours and comes back with He Is One carved into his back... And then cue theme Music. How cool is that? The cold open is so good in this show and its the scariest part a lot of the time.

I love that Scully eats ribs. Scully is awesome. I feel like the more I watch this, the more I really identify her as a character. She's not glamorous, but she's totally beautiful. She is never sexualized, but she's a boss ass lady thats just in charge all the time which is quite sexy. I absolutely love her and I feel like her eating ribs just sealed my friendship with her. I love ribs lol. She looked absolutely gorgeous in this episode too, which I also wrote down. She always looks so 90s and beautiful and she's a sexy pantsuit lady. I've recently decided that there are Dress women and Pant Suit women and she's definitely the queen of the Pant Suit in the 90s... besides Hillary Clinton: Ultimate Pant Suit Queen.

I was also pretty excited for Mulder's slideshow. I don't think he did one in the last episode and I know he didn't from Ascension to One Breath because... who would he give one to? Actually since the X files were shut down, I don't think he did one slide show! Crazy!

Excelsis Dei-

So far this episode made me the most uncomfortable and I think it has the saddest ending of any episode. This episode kind of hit me hard for a number of reasons. It deals with rape, sexual harassment, elderly abuse, experimental drug testing... just some real things that do happen in the real world but there is also a paranormal element to it that just adds a lot of drama.

I'm going to talk about the cold open first... cause thats what most of my notes are about anyway. It was really shocking. The episode takes place in a nursing home and you hear 2 male orderlies pick on a female orderly and they make her do something... and clearly none of them wants to be working there, no one likes the elderly or respects them. I don't think the woman is really showing disrespect for the elderly... she is just fed up by one particular patient that is constantly hitting on her, grabbing her ass and harassing her because there was no harassment in his time. He was probably like what one of the Mad Men would be like in an elderly home.

So this kind of struck a core with me because literally hours before this, I saw a man that was taking care of an older woman... I'm guessing his mother and he was being so rude and nasty to this poor old lady that couldn't help herself. This guy was also drunk, which I suspected with the rude way he was acting and turning to me and my friends and saying "can I sell her or something" or "does anyone want to buy her" like no. Thats just very rude, don't bring us into it and... its nasty. A few minutes later the guy went into a trashcan and threw up, like projectile then went over near the boardwalk and puked again on the rails of the boardwalk... meanwhile this elderly woman was unattended and could have easily wondered off by herself into a not-so-great neighborhood... also I don't think she was capable of driving so he drove her home... which is terrible because he was drunk. If he drove... maybe they walked... who knows. Also after he threw up I heard him say "Did you dribble on yourself again... Of Corse You Did." YOU JUST THREW UP TWICE IN PUBLIC IN FRONT OF PEOPLE THAT WERE EATING YOU HAVE NO ROOM TO TALK! It made me really mad... I can understand that its frustrating to take care of an elderly person that has a disease... maybe she got kicked out of a home or something and thats why he needs to take care of her and why he resents her for it... I don't know but still. It was really hard to watch and be around... especially after seeing him vomit obviously.

So that kind of stuck with me. Also the woman's rape accusation was not believed at all, even by Mulder and... that happens to a lot of women even if they don't claim a paranormal creature did it to them. Its scary. And there were ghosts and stuff in this episode, but nothing was as scary to me as the things that go on in real life and the metaphors this episode was making. I feel like this was very ahead of its time for the 90s and... it was just scary.

Right after the cold open with the nurse being raped, there is a mention of Mulder's porn collection also with Scully and him... I just think that joke was very fitting in this episode. There was a dark humor to it and at this point it made sense to do it.

Also at the end of the episode... nothing was resolved. The ghosts went away... but the real scary stuff was still there. The elderly patients with Dimensia and Altzimers went back to having their diseases and couldn't talk or do anything and there was a sadness in their eyes. The doctor that was trying to help them that emphasized on respecting the elderly got deported because he was giving them the mushrooms that were causing the erratic behavior and them having their memory. No one believed the woman from the beginning's rape accusations. None of the nurses got any better. One of the elderly resident's daughters was about to take him home, but then they ended up leaving him there... it was all very sad and it just sort of ended and nothing was resolved. No good came of any of it.

Aubrey-

I wrote down that the cold open to this was twisty, but kind of dated. The episode overall was pretty good. Most of these episodes after One Breath are all pretty good but never really great... but it picks up with 2 really good ones after this... which I'll be starting in Part 2. I thought the BJ line from Mulder was funny and creepy... it also seems like he's almost hitting on her but not quite a lot of the time... its a little strange a little creepy, but I think its there. There's also a lot of leaning to heavily on the "hunch" Scully has a hunch about things and they just kind of go into that instead of explaining why Scully feels that way... its a bit too convenient to really work as a strong plot point... but its not terrible I guess.

I thought there were kind of a lot of twists in this episode. And its sort of like "ohhh you'd never suspect the woman would do this" and she does. In this episode more so than in the previous ones... the characters were strong and likable. In the last episode none of the characters were really easily likable and I think they used the ghost rape to try to make the woman more likable... but she wasn't. Also the thing with the water was weird and totally out of no where... and this episode had nothing out of place like that. So overall its good! Lol I kind of wanted to sneak in some stuff about the last episode because it got too long and even though this one is better... there isn't a whole lot to talk about. I thought the twist of her being the killer was a lot better in this one and overall it was a pretty creepy episode. I liked it! There were a lot of great images like the Sister carved onto the back and it isn't really explained. It was an interesting concept that that was passed down to her. It was interesting and not at all bad! Lol.

Scribbles About TV: Jane The Virgin Finale Review (SPOILERS)

So.... Can we talk about all the twists because there were a lot! I didn't even see all of them coming! Alrighty we start out in typical Jane The Virgin Mode with Jane's choice between Raphael and Michael... I'd be okay with either but I think I'm team Michael. Jane has a weird moment with Raphael and thinks she's better off without him and just having him be the father of her child. She's also starting to have some feelings for Michael again. Then she almost has the baby on the bus and some woman helps her and gets the bus driver to take her to the hospital. Rogellio and Xo are in Vegas and they get drunk and can't remember what happens, but they make it just in time to see Jane deliver a baby boy. I knew it would be a boy! Lets pause on that a little and go to Michael and his ex partner/friend with benefits who comes back says she has a lead on Sin Rostro, gives him an address where the plastic surgeon is and by the time Michael gets there, he's de

Disney Store Closing Haul

So if you read my post from yesterday- you know that I love The Disney Store, but it is unfortunately closing. I did pick up some things from the store that I thought I'd share with you guys! I did get a couple of t shirts. One is a Star Wars shirt, which is technically a men's shirt but I thought it looked really cool and I don't like that Disney doesn't carry the same things for men and for women. For the most part they look unisex to me and a lot of their men's stuff has characters I like better. Like the star wars shirt for women was grey with pink lettering and had no pictures, but the mens shirt had a really cool metallic silver logo on black clothing with pictures of all the new characters and Luke inside of the letters... much cooler! So I got that! The other shirt I got is really funny and it has Sleeping Beauty on it and it says "I Woke Up Like This." Which I really liked! Super cute and funny and my niece likes it when I wear shirts with c

Scribbles About Life: 3.10.16

Soooo... I don't really want to post about my day... but I don't really want to post anything else either. I started writing something about female characters in movies and TV... but I just didn't like what I was writing and... idk... I was a blog writing machine this week and now I feel defeated. I wrote a ton on Monday and Tuesday and now I just don't feel like doing a post today... but I want to write still... So I'll talk about things that I guess are on my mind lately... Idk. So I got this Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor... and for some reason... I'm addicted to the way that it smells. Idk why, it smells like cherry medicine... but I also sort of like it. Its more cherry than medicine... and I can't smell it on my lips... but Idk. I keep smelling it in the tube. I got some cute stuff from American Eagle yesterday too! I got a dress and a romper... I do not own any Rompers... except this one... but it looked good on me and it didn't make me look f
