Sooo this movie is one I was pretty excited to watch... and I think the end of this was the most disappointing ending of all time... and I'll get into it and I'm probably going to spoil the end... but honestly, you should know what you're in for before watching this movie. It's a really long movie and I thought it was going to be a thriller... but it really wasn't. There's suspense in it still so it will kind of keep you on the edge of your seat... but the end wasn't my thing.
I do have to say this movie was written and directed by Tom Ford. Tom Ford is a well known luxury fashion designer and he has a very prestigious makeup brand... I respect him for this and I love when anyone kind of goes beyond what they are known for. I think Ford wrote and directed this... and I think he even did something with the costumes and the makeup in the movie. And I do love the visuals of this movie... I don't even think it was that badly written or badly acted- I don't have many complaints there... but it's just a frustrating movie.
Okay... actually I have to say I respect Tom Ford even more because he had NOTHING to do with the costumes or makeup in the movie- not a single Tom Ford product was used because he didn't want the movie to be a commercial. Good for him!
Also Tom Ford is really attractive...
So to do all of that and to be ridiculously good looking... lots of respect for this guy! As frustrating as the end of this movie was.
This movie is actually like 2 or 3 movies in one... which they did a pretty good job of transitioning from one to another. You knew which one you were watching without any confusion... but ugh. I didn't like one of the stories and I feel like that's the one that kind of mattered in the movie.
So Amy Adams plays a woman named Susan, who left her first husband Edward (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) for Hutton Morrow- a very handsome man she has more in common with and is going places whereas Gyllenhaal seems not to be... and then about 20 years later Susan is not happy in her marriage and she's reflecting on her marriage with Edward... and Edward sends her his manuscript for a book called Nocturnal Animals, which was Edward's nickname for Susan and he dedicates it to her and she reads it and is captivated by it... which is hard to believe because that was a whole big part of the movie and I was not into it!
So yeah we see Susan's life now, who she was when she was with Edward and then Edward's Novel. Edward's novel is about a man who's wife and daughter were kidnapped and murdered in a rural town and Gyllenhaal's character is trying to find out who they were and get even with them... and I just wasn't into it. I don't know if it was the rural town or the fact that it was kind of disconnected to the rest of the story... but I found it a little predictable and... idk. Part of the story was that Edward really wasn't a good writer... and I think that shows in this part of the movie. It was exciting at first... but then it just kind of fizzled out. It wasn't special.
So I thought Susan's current life was maybe the most interesting that I think they could have done more with. I feel like that's the most relatable thing and they could have done more with it. And I thought there was going to be maybe more of a connection to the novel... I thought maybe this had really happened to her- maybe it was one of the kidnappers that she ended up needing to marry or something. Nope. She was just reading this book that she really liked.
There wasn't much from her previous marriage and honestly... they didn't really seem to have the best chemistry. There were no real love scenes, there was no kissing... it was all just rather cold and a little disconnected... so I feel like it wasn't all that believable that she would fall back in love with him... which I guess is what he was going to do by sending the book with her in the first place... but I don't really think that would work.
I feel like that's the ultimate Male Ego at it's worst. Assuming that this woman will automatically fall in love with her again because he dedicated a crappy unromantic novel to her... which he only really put subtle references to their relationship in... I get that he was proving that he could write and that he could be strong... but the main character in the novel wasn't really that strong... and it wasn't really that good or anything this woman would fall back in love with if she didn't feel trapped in an unhappy marriage... and she was unhappy in the first marriage too... so it's just all bad.
And at the end... I'm just going to spoil it... she agrees to see him- she gets all dressed up to meet him at a restaurant... and he doesn't show up.
Soooo.... yeah. Nothing happens in the end. Nothing really adds up in this story... and it is VERY long watch with such little payoff.
So it was kind of not a terrible movie... but it just had such little payoff it's maybe the worst movie I've ever seen as far as that goes... I don't know. It just kind of sucks. I don't really recommend watching it unless you're a big fan of Tom Ford.
